Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The Energy Conversion and Storage Systems Center (ECaSS) focuses on systems engineering for energy conversion and storage technologies such as batteries, hydrogen, geothermal, thermal, and water power.

A position is immediately available to support water power technology and modeling analysis. An ideal candidate will have the ability to work part time during the school year (15-25 hours per week) and full-time (40 hours per week) during breaks if available.

This intern will be supporting the water power group, which supports market acceleration for marine energy technologies. We are looking for a highly organized intern with excellent writing and research skills. This intern will support the water power numerical modeling effort, including:

  • Work with Senior Engineers to design sub-systems within marine energy applications; including but not limited to, hydrodynamic design exploration, drivetrain designs, structural assemblies, mooring configurations, electric generator designs;
  • Data collection and literature review to capture relevant technology, materials, manufacturing techniques and identify innovation opportunities;
  • Support for the development of analytical methods and models to characterize power production and the associated current and future technology costs, under varied technology development and deployment scenarios;
  • Work within the WEC-Sim environment to support internal code development or joint industry projects;
  • Writing and supporting the publishing of research results.

NREL’s intern program provides a diverse opportunity for students and recent graduates. In addition to mentorship and real, hands-on experience, students and recent graduates will participate in professional development activities that will help strengthen their technical and professional skills.

Basic QualificationsMust be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree student in Mechanical or Ocean Engineering, or related engineering discipline;
  • Excellent writing, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;
  • Fluency within the MATLAB/Simulink environment;
  • Basic working knowledge with computer-aided design software (such as Autocad, Solidworks, Rhino, etc.).

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Interdisciplinary coursework in energy.
  • Engineering background and experience.
  • Adaptable.
  • Works well in groups and individually with moderate supervision and feedback.
  • Experience working with the open-source code WEC-Sim
