About the Position

The Web Developer serves as the primary administrator and a strategic authority for our websites, online properties, and presence. They will have extensive experience in website development, data analytics, and an interest in building dynamic web-based tools to support and promote our public and political education campaign. They will be responsible for the design, development, coding, and support of applications, online tools, and websites for the digital team. This includes supporting strategy, planning, and design to implementation, testing, and optimization; managing web analytics and trends to optimize site engagement. The position is classified as a 1099 contractor/freelancer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain templates, pages, dynamic content, dashboards, and reports for the campaign’s web properties.
  • Responsible for the design, development, coding, and support of applications, online tools, and websites for the digital team.
  • Maintain and serve as administrator to web presence including weekly posting, security updates, troubleshooting, server maintenance, and ensuring we have a user-friendly and accessible site.
  • Manage web hosting accounts, ensuring our domains and hosting accounts are in good standing.
  • Develop user guides, and similar educational or training materials for partners as needed in order to increase user awareness, encourage technology adoption, and increase knowledge of data-driven strategies, especially as relates to digital analytics, metrics tracking, and optimization opportunities.
  • Stay on top of current trends that might be advantageous for internal and external partners.
  • Assist Communications Director with hands-on support and training.
  • Report on website analytics to help inform on communications and outreach strategies.
  • Responsible for web and digital SEO, event tracking, A/B testing, and data analysis

Skills & Experience

A successful candidate will be well-versed in HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, MySQL, and have familiarity with CMS, advocacy, and marketing platforms such as WordPress, Salesforce CRM, Action Network, or similar.

  • Minimum of four years of demonstrated experience in web development. Experience working with non-profit, non-governmental, advocacy, or grassroots organizing institutions is preferred but not required.
  • Strong hands-on experience with PHP, MySQL, and Apache.
  • Proficient in HTML5, CSS3, and SCSS/SASS.
  • Experience manipulating and customizing pre-made WordPress themes
  • Comfortable adding/troubleshooting various WordPress plugins
  • Experience with plug-ins to manage content libraries
  • Ability to work with/create hard-coded non-WordPress sites
  • Experience building responsive sites
  • Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques for maximizing web visibility throughout the design process.
  • Knowledge of interface design for web applications; including social media.
  • Knowledge of building online audiences and communities.
  • Strong knowledge of and competency in UX/ UI principles, and a good understanding of current and emerging web technologies.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to meet deadlines must deliver prototypes and final mock-ups in a timely manner.
  • Experience with creating and measuring the success of online tools and campaigns.
  • Desire to work on a fast-paced, mission-driven, campaign.
  • SEO and Google Analytics / Adwords experience required.
  • Development experience for both mobile, tablet, and desktop.
  • Commitment to advancing economic and racial justice.

Compensation

We are looking to build a long-term relationship with the right candidate. The Web Developer is a remote,1099 contractor/freelancer, preferred to be southern CA-based, but is not required. If not CA-based must be willing to travel. Compensation is up to $40 per hour and is commensurate with experience. The right candidate should expect to be available approximately 15-20 hours per week however hours are flexible.
