ABOUT THE POSITION

This position falls within the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Under the supervision of the WIC Program Manager, the WIC Nutrition Assistant provides group and one-on-one nutrition education and breastfeeding promotion and support within a participant-centered framework to meet the needs of WIC participants. The duties of the WIC Nutrition Assistant include but are not limited to:


  • Provide educational sessions and guidance on nutrition, breastfeeding, and other health-related topics, in both English and Spanish. (in person, via phone, and virtually)
  • Provide referrals as appropriate (e.g. to the food bank, food assistance programs, health care provider, and other health linkages, etc.).
  • Counsel in a timely manner to maintain an acceptable productivity rate (e.g. keep appointments at allotted time frames while still successfully completing session).
  • Accurately document participant contacts, including enrollment and recertification contacts.
  • Comply with all regulations regarding corporate integrity and security obligations.
  • Work successfully as part of a team and cooperate in accomplishing department goals and objectives.
  • Contribute to the success of Marin County WIC by participating in Quality Assurance and Improvement activities.
  • Establish working relationships and rapport with all WIC authorized store managers and store personnel within the Marin County WIC Program’s geographic service area.
  • Provide ongoing support to WIC vendors, promoting a positive shopping experience for WIC families Conduct food price surveys of WIC foods upon request from the State WIC Program.
Part of the job of the WIC Nutrition Assistant is to participate in and successfully complete the WIC Nutrition Assistant Training. Upon completion, the WIC Nutrition Assistant will be certified.

Bilingual Testing/Certification: Successful candidates must demonstrate proficiency in both Spanish and English prior to appointment. If the selected candidate has not taken the test, a bilingual proficiency exam will be administered to ensure the candidate possesses the appropriate skill level to meet the requirements.

The candidate has excellent customer service skills and works respectfully and non-judgmentally with clients and colleagues. The ideal candidate also has an interest in and professional and/or personal experience serving diverse populations.

Additionally, the ideal candidate is comfortable using technology and is detail-oriented. They work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment and adapt to the different formats for educating others (in person, group setting, phone, and/or virtual platforms). They are open to learning new concepts and acquiring new skills and are able to do so successfully.

Experience with facilitation and providing direct nutrition and breastfeeding education and support is highly desirable. Experience with behavior change work and motivational interviewing is also highly desirable.

Three years of experience in a health, social service or community organization that demonstrates possession of the stated knowledge and abilities plus successful completion of twelve (12) semester units of education in health science, behavioral science and/or social welfare from a recognized college or equivalent. One additional year of experience may substitute for the educational requirement. College-level education in a field as listed above may be substituted for the experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years. Demonstrated oral and written proficiency in English and a designated second language is required.
