Job Description

The Piney Woods School is seeking an individual with the energy and passion to serve as Weekend Residential Counselor. The successful candidate will appreciate and embrace the school’s history, mission and values, but will also be committed to creating new possibilities for the school that will help to guarantee a strong and vibrant future.

The Piney Woods School was founded in 1909 on land known as the piney woods located near Mississippi’s capital city of Jackson, emphasizing educating the head, heart and hands of every student through academic achievement, community service and occupational skills. The Piney Woods School endures today as the largest historically African American, independent, college preparatory, boarding school in the country.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution preferred (in the area of Human Services or child development preferred); demonstrated extensive work experience in Human Services or work with adolescents in various settings (i.e. group homes); training in service delivery will be highly considered
  • Willingness to become certified in First Aid and CPR
  • Must be available to reside in the dormitory assigned and on-call as needed

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist adolescents with daily academic assignments (in particular during study time)
  • Assist in developing and implementing a curriculum for residential life skills
  • Assist in program planning for students in residence halls
  • Assist in documentation of program, incidents, and other activities
  • Ensure students follow activities for daily living (ADL), i.e. cleaning rooms, residence halls, and appropriate wake up times
  • Conduct daily inspection of living environment, i.e. rooms and closets using accountability report
  • Provide appropriate supervision of students in the residence halls and throughout the campus as assigned, i.e. cafeteria, study time
  • Chaperone and escort students to activities on and/or off campus
  • Submit requested reports in a timely manner, i.e. behavioral, incident, accident, etc.
  • Carry out all activities assigned during the assigned shift
  • Supervise and evaluate all student workers assigned to the dormitory
  • Monitor and report all repair and replacement needs of the residence halls to the immediate supervisor
  • Participate in staff development
  • Attend annual convocation
  • Exercise proper and safe work practices

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform light maintenance functions as needed
  • Enforce students’ dress code and report violators
  • Enforce school discipline procedures
  • Serve on various committees
  • Carry out all school rules, policies, and procedures
  • Perform other related functions as requested by your supervisor(s) or other school administrators
