Job Description

BPL is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced senior designer to join our Marketing & Communications department. The designer will be focused on digital design, but will also contribute to a wide range of design projects including: campaign branding, social media assets, and printed collateral. Marketing & Communications is the creative powerhouse behind the BPL brand, responsible for showing Brooklynites what the Library can do for them – books, yes, but so much more than books! – and the 14-person department serves as an in-house marketing and design shop for the departments and branches that make up the organization.
This person will report to the Creative Director.
Responsibilities:Responsibilities
  • Own user interface and visual design for internal and patron-facing digital tools, such as the BPL website, mobile apps, email service providers.
  • Collaborate with our internal front-end development team and 3rd-party vendors to implement, iterate, and refine designs.
  • Provide knowledge and leadership around current digital and web standards, including best practices for accessible design.
  • Design for various media including posters, brochures, invitations, logos, exhibitions and promotional materials from concept to production.
  • Work closely with the Creative Director to understand goals, objectives and visual direction/strategy of internal stakeholders.
  • Uphold and expand upon BPL’s digital brand guidelines, helping to create and organize the visual language of our brand.
  • Collaborate with other members of the marketing team, including copywriters, social media managers, digital engagement team, and production manager.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings, critiques and brainstorming sessions

Qualifications:Preferred Experience
  • A strong design portfolio demonstrating knowledge of web design and responsive layout.
  • Deep knowledge of UX best practices, patterns, and requirements
  • Strong experience in Adobe CC and web design tools (Adobe XD preferred, Figma or Sketch also acceptable)
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Experience with animation/motion graphics and basic video editing (After Effects, GIF design)
  • Familiarity with Drupal and Salesforce Marketing Cloud a plus

Required Skills
  • Strong project management, organization skills, and creative thinking skills, and attention to detail
  • Be able to manage multiple ongoing projects of varying scope and deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken.
  • 4-6 years digital design experience; previous in-house or not-for-profit environments a plus.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, Communications, User Experience Design, or related field preferred.
