Utility Worker

Primary responsibilities for role:

  • Using established procedures and working under immediate supervision, maintains Plasma Center facility and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.

Essentials of the Job

  • Cleans, sweeps, and mops during the work day schedule and as needed, with special emphasis on donor bathrooms and waiting areas.

Supplements custodial staff as needed to help with weather conditions that impact the appearance of the Center.

  • Responsible for building maintenance; doing repairs and preventative maintenance when possible. Changing light bulbs, replace stained ceiling tiles, replace batteries in toilets, check sink faucets and eye wash stations for proper operation and flow (clean faucet aerators if needed). Clean freezers as assigned by supervisor. Inspects all TV’s in the donor waiting area or in donor floor area for proper operation/connections. Brings major building problems to the immediate attention of center management.
  • May be required to maintain and clean or inspect landscape, grounds and parking area and snow removal (if applicable) adjacent to the Center provided by outside vendor. Report lights out on buildings and/or parking lots to management. Report damage to fencing, gates, graffiti, vandalism, dumpster/trash bin areas, cigarette butt receptacles, etc. to management.
  • Empties wastebaskets and conducts similar servicing as needed.
  • Provide general care and maintenance of cabinets, drawers, doors, water pressure in sinks and toilets.
  • Maintains and replenishes all custodial supplies and other supplies as needed. Breaking down boxes before going into the trash dumpers.
  • Helps with plasma shipments, ordering, receiving and stocking of supplies, equipment and other items.
  • Meet with service vendors on site as they make repairs or need oversight.
  • Periodic assignments as directed by Center Management Team.
  • Assist Center Management with the collection of files ready for archiving and prepare files for shipment to offsite storage.

Other Essential Functions of the Job

  • Assumes other special activities and responsibilities from time to time as directed.

Nature of Work and Scope

Education Requirements: High school graduation or GED equivalent proficiency in the use of English and math.

Experience Requirements: Some previous repair and maintenance experience required. General knowledge of custodial

and building maintenance required.

Other Essential Knowledge: Able to work with numbers. Detail minded. Legible hand writing. Ability to coordinate

inventories on a first in/first out basis.

Contacts: Internal: Other Center employees.

External: Some contact with repair/maintenance vendors and customers may be necessary.

Direct Work of Others:

Decision Making: Under immediate supervision. Decisions made are almost always determined by specific

instructions or existing policies and procedures.

Challenges:

Working Conditions : Physical: Standing and walking 90% of the time. Must be able to reach, grasp, twist and turn,

with high level of manual dexterity. Must be able to see and speak with customers and observe

equipment operation. Ability to kneel, crouch, and crawl to work with equipment, files, and

cleaning procedures. Able to lift and carry 25 or more lbs.

Hazards: Exposure to various odors (chemical, body), noise from customer floor especially

during peak times. Exposure to cold temperatures. Exposed to human source products and

various chemicals (bleach, germicide).

Stressors: High volume and fast pace. Interruptions by customers or co-workers for assistance.

Sometimes working short staffed. Responsible for the welfare of customers and continuous

monitoring of equipment and procedures.
