TREE TRIMMER / CLIMBER

Job Description

Includes: Apprentice Climber, Equipment Operator and Heavy Equipment Operator


Summary: Trim and remove trees to clear right-of-way for communications lines and electric power lines, remove unwanted, diseased or dying limbs on trees, or to affect the health and safety of trees or surrounding areas by performing the following duties.


Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: Includes some or all of the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Prune treetops
  • Repair damaged trees by trimming or removal
  • Remove broken limbs from wires, roofs and other objects
  • Fell trees interfering with power service, or other objects or structures
  • Understand safe and proper methods to climb trees
  • Understand proper pruning and removal methods and procedures for trees and shrubs
  • Climb and perform trimming operations in trees using rope, saddle or spurs
  • Prune and/or remove large trees
  • Control lowering ropes. Supply tools for tree workers aloft
  • Control road and sidewalk traffic as needed by use of warning devices
  • Properly maintain, prepare and operate tools and equipment (hand tools, chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts)
  • Drive, use, maintain and operate equipment (trucks, aerial lifts, chippers, sprayers, etc.)
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly maintenance inspections on equipment
  • Install cabling, bracing rod or lightning protection system or lags in trees at various heights
  • Cut, chip and load brush and wood
  • Proper job site cleanup
  • Understand and perform the principles of tree moving and planting operations
  • Understand the mechanics of liquid fertilization of trees and shrubs
  • Understand the maintenance, safety and use of fertilization equipment
  • Recognize all major trees, shrubs and poisonous plants in the geographical area
  • Fertilize trees and shrubs and understand fertilization principles
  • Perform tree transplanting and planting operations
  • Assist other crew members in performing job duties
  • Tie and use the basic tree care knots
  • Use protective equipment as required
  • Perform as acting Foreman, if required
  • Understand and perform first aid, CPR and aerial rescue procedures
  • Understand electrical installations and electrical rules and regulations (Z133.3) if working near transmission wires
  • Understand and apply safe and proper methods to climb trees
  • Comprehend and apply safety requirements
  • Communicate by reading relevant manuals and materials, speaking clearly, distinctively and listening to instructions

Education and Qualifications: An individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Driver’s license required. Commercial driver’s license preferred and may be required, depending on job requirements
  • Completion of Tree Trimmer Orientation Program
  • Tree Trimmer A – 5 or more years’ experience or demonstrated competence/education
  • Tree Trimmer B – 2 to 4 years’ experience or demonstrated competence/education
  • Tree Trimmer C – 1 to 2 years’ experience or demonstrated competence/education
  • Tree Trimmer Trainee – No experience


Language Ability: Read and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos. Write correspondence. Effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization. Bi-lingual in Spanish is beneficial.


Math Ability: Perform basic arithmetic computations


Reasoning Ability: Apply understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Identify and resolve problems involving multiple variables in varied situations


Computer Skills: Basic computer skills required


Certificates and Licenses:

  • Pesticide license, if required by state law
  • Line clearance certification if working near utility transmission lines
  • Obtain and maintain required licenses and certifications


Supervisory Responsibilities: No supervisory responsibilities except as acting Foreman


Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described are representative of those employees encounter while performing the essential functions of this Job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to:

  • Moving mechanical parts
  • Outdoor weather conditions and environments

  • Exert up to 100lbs of force occasionally, up to 50lbs of force frequently and up to 20lbs of force constantly to move objects.
  • Exert enough force to lift own body weight up a rope into a tree
  • Climb (i.e. trees, ladders) using feet, legs, arms and hands
  • Stand and walk at and around the work site
  • Reach (i.e. extending arms, hands and fingers) and handle (holding and grasping tools, limbs, etc.) and twist
  • See and judge the distance of objects and items
  • Perform in the presence of distractions or work frustrations
  • Obtain and select pertinent information through investigation, observation and questioning, including organize and combine different pieces of information into meaningful order to identify problems
  • Communication is required for moderate (80’) distances while equipment is operating
  • Regular and timely attendance
