Job SummaryCoordinates and monitors the ER Patient Access/PBX processes to insure timely registration and accuracy of registrations. Insure that services provided are safe, efficient, professional, and consistent with departmental and hospital policies. Takes a Team Lead approach and reports daily activities to the Patient Access Leadership Team as appropriate. Must be able to work Days, Evenings, Nights, Weekends, and Holidays as needed. Position RequirementsFormal Education / Training:Must be high school graduate and have a working knowledge of Patient Access and processes. Must be detailed oriented and maintain a knowledge of insurances and insurance assignment, collections and must have good communication skills to convey department and hospital policies. Workplace Experience:5 years of prior experience in a hospital setting or related area is required. Equipment and Skills Training:Meditech, Fax, Copier, time and attendance system, patient access software, WOW’s, cash management/posting, visitor badge system, FormsFast, Multiple alarm systems, Education system, Label and armband printers, PBX console, security radio, hand-held communication equipment, and paging equipment, email. Physical Environment:Highly active office/clinical environment Physical Effort:Prolonged walking, sitting, standing, bending, pushing wheelchairs up to 250 lbs, consistent repetitive keyboard and terminal usage. Ability to consistently push bedside registration computer to register patients timely. Consistently work well under pressure and can function independently. Efficient verbal and written communication. Able to communicate in English verbally and legibly.
Key Results1.Understands PBX and registration in ED Patient Access runs 24/7. Understands that work assignments and hours may vary to accommodate staffing needs for all areas of ED Patient Access and accepts changes willingly.2. Consistently interviews patients to obtain and enter accurate demographics and insurance information in a timely manner. Uses bedside mobile cart to register patients at bedside in assigned ED areas.3. Maintains working knowledge of all positions in department and Adjusts job responsibilities as needed to cover as registrar, front desk, PBX operator when needed. Participates in departmental meetings/huddles/etc.4. Ability to use critical thinking skills to research issues that result in a solution relieving the need for contact with the ER Patient Access Supervisor and/or Patient Access Director.5. Reports any and all Departmental and staff needs and/or incidents needed to be addressed beyond a coaching in the PAP policy to the ER Patient Access Supervisor and/or Patient Access Director.6. Works AccuReg disputes and corrects errors before final billing of account, informs and educates staff as necessary, and maintains an initial accuracy rate of 95% for a 12 month period.7. Maintains an accessible open environment for registrars and PBX operators- using the coaching method from the PAP policy, setting goals, complimenting achievements.8. Handles and prioritizes multiple tasks and completes any other job duties assigned by ER Patient Access Supervisor and/or Director of Patient Access.9. Consistently follows point of service collection policies and procedures. Follows cash management guidelines at all times. Insures cash management procedures are current and are being followed.10.Communicates effectively with registrars regarding Press Ganey, accuracy of information obtained, professionalism, customer service skills. Is responsible for the employees performing PBX and registration function during shift, is familiar with and adheres to hospital policies, treats co-workers with trust and respect.11. Consistently uses insurance verification solution, reads verification response for insurance coverage, assigns correct insurance plan and posts back notes in the Meditech system and obtains complete and accurate information to complete the Medicare secondary payer form.12. Is available and accountable to provide on-call coverage when assigned.
