MNPS Schools of Innovation Recruitment Incentive

School Years 2021-22 and 2022-23

In an effort to recruit and retain high quality teachers, the Schools of Innovation will offer incentives to individuals who agree to work two consecutive school years (2021-2022 and 2022-2023) in the same priority school within Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS). A priority school is defined as a school whose performance fell within the bottom five percent statewide and was designated as such by the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE). The incentive will be paid in addition to the individual’s salary as indicated by the MNPS salary schedule at the time of hire. These supplemental funds have been earmarked by the TDOE to be made available to priority schools.


Recruitment Eligibility Requirements:

  • The individual must have fulfilled all MNPS hiring procedures.
  • The teacher must be certified and serve in one of the following hard to staff areas: English/Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, Social Studies, Exceptional Education, or English Learners.
  • The teacher may already be an employee of MNPS who is not in an MNPS priority school but has agreed to a placement in an MNPS priority school.
  • Current Tennessee teachers must have an overall observation score of 3, 4, or 5 as indicated by a TDOE-approved evaluation framework.
  • The teacher is not eligible to receive this stipend if he or she is already working in an MNPS priority school or is voluntarily transferring from one priority school to another within MNPS.
  • The teacher is not eligible to receive both a school-level and a district-level recruitment incentive (if applicable).
  • The teacher must begin work prior to September 1, 2021.

Recruitment Compensation Agreement:

  • During the 2021-2022 school year, the eligible teacher will receive a gross stipend of $5,000. Applicable taxes will affect the net amount paid. This amount constitutes the entire stipend and obligates the teacher to remain at the priority school through the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years.
  • The stipend will be distributed in one installment: by the end of September, 2021.
  • If the teacher is terminated, non-renewed, resigns, or voluntarily transfers from this assigned position prior to the completion of the 2022-2023 school year, he or she will be required to reimburse MNPS a prorated amount to be determined by MNPS Human Resources via an agreed upon repayment plan or in a lump sum.
  • The teacher shall not be required to reimburse MNPS if his/her assigned priority school is closed by the MNPS Board of Education.

REPORTS TO: School Principal DEPARTMENT NAME: Leadership and Learning JOB SUMMARY (2-3 sentences): Instructs students individually and in groups using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions and demonstrations. This position teaches elementary grades. PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS: List, in the order of time spent, the essential tasks performed by the position. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Bachelors’ degree in education or related degree.

Responsibilities of Teachers Serving Exceptional Children


Teachers who serve exceptional children are teachers of regular, special classes, resource teachers, itinerant teachers, homebound and hospital teachers, child development specialists, and other teachers with exceptional children in their classrooms. Specific responsibilities of these teachers are
  • as follows:

  • Participate in the referral and evaluation processes, as appropriate.

  • Cooperate and participate in the development of individualized educational programs.

  • Coordinate the development of individual instruction plan for each child, including developmental and sequential short-term objectives leading to the achievement of annual goals specified in the IEP.

  • Provide appropriate instruction of exceptional students.

  • Request support and assistance from specialized resource personnel as necessary to meet the needs of exceptional children.

  • Provide consultation assistance to other educational personnel as appropriate.

  • Monitor student progress and update individualized educational programs.

  • Maintain continuous progress report on student achievement of specified objectives.

  • Participate in and conduct periodic reviews of student progress.

  • Hold and attend regular parental conferences and conduct home visits to students and their parents, as appropriate.

  • Participate in annual placement meeting of exceptional students providing M-Team with summary of student achievement in prior placement.
