Job Description

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is a world leader in using, innovating and providing cyberinfrastructure to enable advances and new discovery in science and engineering. Focusing on data-oriented and computational science and engineering applications, SDSC serves as an international resource for data cyberinfrastructure through the provision of software, hardware and human resources in multi-disciplinary science and engineering, and serves as a leadership national cyberinfrastructure Center to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and broader community.

The SDSC Sherlock Division delivers high performance production cyberinfrastructure and policy, business, operational, and technology advice supporting information technology research and development, for federal and state agencies, academia including University of California (UC), and industry partners. The Sherlock division operates Sherlock Cloud, which provides a managed multi Cloud solution that complies with Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and NIST Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) compliant requirements.

The Division primarily focuses on building cyberinfrastructure for government, academia and research community that offers a multitude of high-touch, value-added, turnkey solutions that span Cloud Computing, Compliance, Cybersecurity, Big Data, Analytics and Data Science. The experts in Sherlock Division have developed and deployed specific services designed to provide a solid and secure foundation for a wide range of research and business initiatives. The Division currently supports the federal government including, Department of Defense, National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Science Foundation, and a number of academic and UC entities, and complies with the specific requirements of each organization.

The incumbent will apply advanced systems infrastructure concepts and campus, medical center or Office of the President or institutional objectives to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. S/he will select methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results, give presentations to associated team and other technical units, evaluate new technologies including performing moderate to complex cost/benefit analyses, and may lead a team of systems/infrastructure professionals.

As a technical systems administration expert for the Sherlock Division, evaluate, design, install, manage, and maintain a large installation of enterprise server and storage systems running Linux and Windows in support of both productivity and research computing at the San Diego Supercomputer Center and public Cloud platforms. The incumbent will work with critical data systems to lead the effort to deliver a platform for the Sherlock Division FISMA, HIPAA and CUI projects and research. The work content includes all aspects of computer systems, networking, security and application programming for building the infrastructure needed to support the program and defining processes to implement and maintain systems. S/he will be responsible for making technical recommendations related to computing hardware, network components (switches, routers, etc.), operating systems and software architectures.

Additionally, the incumbent will design interfaces, integrations, programs and database concepts, benchmark hardware and software, and design solutions to technical problems, b responsible for performance by monitoring, maintaining, administering, developing, and testing computing, network, and application components related to large, complex computing platformed used for FISMA, HIPAA and CUI projects and research, and work with researchers on strategies, then translate strategies into architectural goals. S/he will confer with the Sherlock Division leadership to achieve consensus on technical architectural direction, analyze and propose new systems and technologies, and balance workload across multiple Sherlock Division programs/projects. The incumbent will also develop and maintain a disaster recovery plan for systems as well as data recovery plan in the event of a natural disaster, as well as exhibit technical mastery of system internals, network security, database and operating systems, emerging cluster computing technologies and architectures and the interrelationship of all. S/he will provide support to the development of hybrid computing infrastructure per the vision of the Sherlock Division.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions. Expert in cross-platform OS and application integration (Linux/Windows).

  • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex server-based software.

  • Proven experience with HIPAA NIST 800-66, CUI NIST 800-171 and FISMA NIST 800-53 regulations and systems management protocols, including expertise designing and implementing controls compliant with DOD and NIST Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).

  • Demonstrated experience with Azure and or AWS platforms.

  • Advanced experience writing and editing the most complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration. Advanced programming and/or scripting skills in Python, Ruby, Java and Powershell scripting languages.

  • General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
