Job Description

Lyon Shipyard has an opening for a supervisor for our Sheetmetal and habitability shop. Looking for a solid experienced supervisor. With a background in ship repair. Our shop works on custom and made to order projects.
Directly initiating and/or implementing a production schedule and man-hour estimates for completion of a job assignment Perform supervisory and management functions related to job cost accounting. Responsible for ordering the required materials and supplies for the completion of jobs. Assigns duties and adjusts work procedures/schedules to meet production schedules. Ensures that the workers accomplish the required job assignments. Maintains an accurate record of employee time and certification records. Ensures that yard safety rules and regulations are upheld throughout the yard. Carries out duties as assigned by the VP of Production for the following departments;

Duties and responsibilities**

Oversee the following duties:
1) Cuts and forms metal, gaskets, and wedges used in electric motors and generators, performing any combination of following duties: Measures and marks dimensions and holes on insulation material, such as felt, fiber, mica, and fiberglass, using specifications or template.
2) Places sheet of metal against shearing machine stops, depresses pedal to lower blade to cut strips, or inserts sheet under roller-type hold down and against stops of circular saw to cut strips.
3) Places cut material into bending machine and depresses pedal to rotate movable section around fixed mandrel to shape sides.
4) Holds flat and wedge metal against pedestal grinder to grind U-shaped bevel in end or inserts sheets between drums of drum sander to wear down to specified thickness.
5) Measures thickness of each mica sheet, using micrometer, and stacks sheets according to dimensions.
7) expected to strategize independently and problem - solve as appropriate General Identify various sheet metal types and sizes of metal by sight and feel
8) Complete habitability work. rip out and installation of berthing spaces, heads, mess decks and galley work know various materials to include but not limited to galvanized steel, aluminum , stainless steel , etc.
9) Operate and use power tools and hand tools saber saws drill motors, grinders, sanders, reciprocating saws, rivets guns
10) Remove , fabricate and install ventilation systems Read vent sketches, drawings and prints Form and fit using materials and assemble several fittings together Layout and assemble sheets of material Remove, repair of replace ventilation systems by using drawings , hand tools and power tools and equipment Fabricate sections of ventilation by using skill knowledge and power equipment Install ventilation systems ducting, fans, heaters, cooling coils, etc. fabricate most sheet metal items, flashing, panels, pans boxes, miscellaneous items bulkhead panels, rat guards, screens and covers fabricate all kinds of parts from stainless steel , aluminum, steel and galvanized sheets.

  • Managerial Duties: *

  • Act as liaison with job estimator. Provide calculations on hours involved, materials needed, and staff required.
  • Recognize and communicate to Foreman any priority projects or problems, such as employee or job costing issues.
  • Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed, bring problems to the attention of the Superintendent, Safety Manager, QA Manager or HR Manager.
  • Coordinate, direct and lead workers engaged in shipbuilding activities. Assign work to employees, using material and worker requirements data.
  • Supervise crews to obtain top quality workmanship, efficiency, employee satisfaction, morale, communication, commitment, teamwork and pride.
  • Review and verify employee time sheets and submit to payroll on specified days. Ensure that hours are assigned to the proper vessel.
  • Suggest and initiate personnel actions, such as promotions, transfers, hires and training requirements. Adhere to the company’s Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Policy when taking part in any employment action or decision, such as hiring, job assignment, layoff or termination.
  • Communicate regularly about repair and maintenance needs on all major pieces of equipment on assigned jobs.

  • Follow Daily Procedures & Protocols as set forth in job orientations and trainings/ meetings.
  • Basic Knowledge of administration and management. Must be able to plan, allocate resources, manage production and coordinate people and equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in shipbuilding, specific to his/ her department.

Work is regularly performed in outside weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat, near moving mechanical parts and includes occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and to vibration.
