The Supervisor of Power Engineering will assist the Deputy Director of Power in directing and controlling the work of the Power Engineering group engaged in engineering services for all aspects of the Power Department, including utility/substation operations, system control, traction power, facility electrical services, records and documentation.


Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for conferring with the Deputy Director on problems involving normal operations, changes in plans and procedures, and projected future development.
  • Schedule and assign daily work tasks of up to twenty (20) engineering personnel, monitoring performance and progress, coaching/mentoring, and reporting status to the Deputy Director.
  • Maintain the proper discipline of personnel under his/her supervision with respect to rule violations, poor work performance, absenteeism and other conditions requiring employee discipline.
  • Manage the activities of inspection, test and analysis of materials and equipment used by the Power Systems Maintenance Departments.
  • Lead a team and supervise the preparation and updating of power operating plans, charts, maps, graphs, prints and records.
  • Supervise the preparation of field surveys, studies, designs and specifications, working drawings and reports as required. Assist in maintaining close coordination with the Authority's engineers, consultants, and Capital Delivery regarding design and construction of all new and updated power systems.
  • Provide input regarding maintainability of proposed installations and reliability of products and methods to be employed.
  • Periodically inspect construction of new power equipment to insure that finished facility conforms to recommended maintenance and repair standards, and applicable codes.
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of department-wide Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), design standards and equipment specifications.
  • Oversee the management of department electrical assets, including preventative maintenance scope and schedules, and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to work locations and to assist at emergencies and/or events as needed.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or coworker in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed.
  • Respond or report to work as directed by supervisory personnel for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • Uphold the rights and interests of the Authority while building and maintaining an effective and productive relationship with employees.
  • Assist in the management of a workforce by ensuring the fair and consistent application and strict adherence to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the Authority including the EEO, AntiDiscrimination and AntiHarassment and AntiRetaliation policies.
  • Perform related duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of recent experience in the design, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of power systems, including overhead and underground utilities.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least two (2) year of supervisory experience managing a team, including but not limited to, motivating and performance management.
  • Experience with AC distribution systems and high voltage.
  • Familiarity with DC distribution systems.
  • Effective organizational, analytical, confidentiality, multitasking, time management and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Word, Excel, Database, PeopleSoft or Mainframe applications. Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information in an appropriate manner.
  • Have excellent customer service, conflict resolution, writing and speaking skills.
  • The ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
  • Adhere to rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the MBTA including the EEO, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, and anti-retaliation policies • Ability to supervise or work effectively with diverse workforce
  • Ability to comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, background screening, and the MBTA’s medical requirements, including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screening
  • Have a satisfactory work record for the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of this posting, including overall employment, job performance, discipline, and safety records (infractions and/or offenses occurring after the closing of the posting and before the filling of a vacancy may preclude a candidate from consideration for selection)
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service
