Job Description

The California Energy Commission (CEC) is seeking to hire two student assistants to assist the Renewable Energy Division staff in the Renewable Portfolio Office’s Verification and Compliance Unit and Certification & Eligibility of Renewable Technologies Unit. ~Renewables Portfolio Standard Program Renewables Portfolio Standard – RPS | California Energy Commission
One student assistant will work with the Verification and Compliance Unit on verification-related activities including tracking annual renewable procurement claims, facility generation data, and retail sales. The student will work closely with staff to track and resolve discrepancies in the reported data, create and maintain Excel spreadsheets, perform research of historical program data, and other special projects, as assigned. The student assistant will assist external stakeholders with phone and email inquiries.
The other student assistant will work with the Certification Unit to provide support to the staff in certification-related activities including determining the eligibility of renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, bioenergy and energy storage devices. The Student Assistant will lead outreach for the RPS program through the Outlook email inbox and RPS call line as well as coordinate meetings between staff and stakeholders to discuss aspects of their renewable energy projects.
Both students will work in a dynamic environment on renewable energy programs that support clean energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the State of California.
Conditions of EmploymentThis is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Work ScheduleFlexible, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistants and Graduate Student Assistants generally work up to 20 hours per work week (Sunday-Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per work week during breaks; (Winter, Spring and Summer).

Preferred Qualifications
Duties and ResponsibilitiesAdditional duties include providing support to staff on outreach to utilities and stakeholders. Duties by program: ~ Renewables Portfolio Standard Program ~ https://www.energy.ca.gov/programs-and-topics/programs/renewables-portfolio-standard ~
  • Verification Unit: Excel spreadsheet analysis to verify renewable energy facility generation and retirement of renewable energy credits.
  • Certification unit: Analysis of renewable energy resources through technical and policy documentation. Regular use of the RPS Online System (web portal). Correspondence with stakeholders via email and phone.
  • Various ad-hoc research assignments related to historical data and new renewable resources; retail electricity and renewable energy data to determine statistical trends and support data analysis.
  • Students will also assist periodically with special projects, data collection and evaluation, and report formatting and editing.

Physical RequirementsSit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
