Staff Chaplain - Chaplaincy Services

Position: Staff Chaplain

Department: Chaplaincy Services

Schedule: 40 Hour, Days

POSITION SUMMARY:

The mission of the BMC Spiritual Care Department is to ensure high-quality and accessible chaplaincy services to BMC patients, their families and staff.

Working under the supervision of the director, provides chaplaincy services, spiritual guidance and support to in-house patients, their families, and to staff. Provides pastoral ministry and performs or arranges for religious services to meet the needs of patients and their families.

Assess patient and family spiritual needs and assists families in using their faith in dealing with illness, trauma, and end-of-life.

Visits newly admitted patients and patients with special requests, follows up with patients from previous visits when appropriate.

Provides crisis intervention as necessary; responds to Code Blue and Trauma Alerts; assists in helping families remain informed of patient's condition.

Documents patient and family service provided.

Completes decedent care protocol; assists family to use their faith system in coping with death; provides support to the family as appropriate when they view body; assists family in completing all necessary paperwork i.e. death certificate, funeral home release, etc. Supports staff in dealing with their emotion in loss of a patient.

Actively supports the Director of Clinical Pastoral Education and provides administrative and supervisory assistance when needed to ensure the operations and quality of the Clinical Pastoral Education program.

Maintains a working relationship between the department of Pastoral Services and medical staff, nursing staff, and other departments.

Follows established safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties in order to ensure a safe environment.

Provides pastoral services in such a way as to accomplish the institutional, as well as the departmental objectives. Functions in such a manner that reflects the mission and vision of the institution. Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best customer service and patient care may be provided.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Requires knowledge of counseling and clinical pastoral care, including training in human development and behavior, spirituality and religious practices common to the community generally acquired through the completion of a Master's degree in Divinity or Theology. Must have endorsement by a recognized religious body or authority.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the Association of Professional Chaplains.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience.
