Profession (Job Category): Engineering & Science Job Schedule: Full time Remote: No Job Description: Job Summary: Seeking a talented and self-motivated automotive Test Development Engineer for the MERT (Mechanical, Environmental and Reliability Testing) and electrical testing group in Farmington Hills, MI. The ideal candidate will have experience in creating and executing validation test procedures for functional and reliability evaluation of complex electronic control systems. These systems include automotive control units geared towards ADAS and BMS (Battery Management Systems). The ideal candidate will be working in a culture that fosters creativity and problem solving. This position will play a key role in a development team that creates advanced automotive electronic control units for the future. Job Responsibilities: The candidate will need to work with minimal direction but would work under the direction of DE management and support other DE staff located at both the Farmington Hills, MI and Harrodsburg, KY facilities. Duties to include the following:
  • Understand customer requirements and lead the creation and execution of detailed DV and PV test plans.
  • Negotiate testing requirements with the customer to ensure complete and accurate test coverage
  • Design, setup and realize the test systems, including, but not limited to, designing and acquiring appropriate hardware (e.g., fixtures, sensors, actuators), interfacing electrical or computer systems (e.g. data acquisition systems), and writing test scripts.
  • Create specifications that will allow the software group to implement the required functionality within the ECU’s test firmware.
  • If the testers are being outsourced due to timing or complexity constraints, then duties would include:
  • developing tester requirements and diagrams appropriate for the DUT to support quoting activities.
  • anticipating how the tester’s interaction with the DUT can damage the tester and capturing these concerns.
  • learning vendor’s basic test scripts and adjusting them as necessary.
  • Collect test data, perform data analysis, create report, and present the results.
  • Evaluate, identify, and execute improvements to existing validation test plans and test rigs.
  • Develop and maintain high level of communications with cross-functional team and partners, including internal and external teams (i.e., maintaining an open issues list and tracking progress).
  • Assist root cause analysis and corrective action for hardware and software components and products.
  • Attend training to learn new tools and methodologies and keep up to date on market and technical trends.
  • Create and strive towards a positive work environment by demonstrating and sharing functional and technical knowledge.
  • Perform any other assignments from time-to-time as management so directs.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will:
  • Creative and self-motivated with the ability to understand and divide a vision into prioritized tasks.
  • Strong experience in validation design and development tasks.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways.
  • Ability to work on challenging assignments with aggressive schedules.
  • Experience in hardware and software system integration, such as integration of new sensors, actuators into a new or existing test system.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in automotive ECU test and validation environment.
  • Experience in data collection and statistical data analysis.
  • Experience in requirements gathering and writing specifications as they relate to test functionality.
Special Knowledge / Skills:
  • Able to lead and mentor lesser experienced engineers
  • Have experience interfacing with customers
  • Be able to coordinate program activities with team members at remote sites (including overseas)
  • English: fluent in written and verbal communication
  • Communication protocols (CAN, LIN, RS-232, USB, SENT, Ethernet, SERDES)
  • Use of Vector CAN toolchain is highly desirable.
  • Ability to read and make electrical schematics and engineering drawings.
  • Perform schematic capture and PCB layout using Altium Designer or equivalent tool chain.
  • Perform circuit analysis and simulation using LTSpice or similar SPICE based tools.
  • Programming and data acquisition experience using National Instruments Labview ecosystem.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Additionally, the ability to work independently with minimal direction is required as are strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience with PCs and application software, such as MS Office tools is also required. Education: Bachelor or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years applicable experience in automotive ECU development. Job level determined by various factors such as organization size, responsibility, career stage, and capabilities. Supervisory Responsibilities: leading and mentoring the efforts of engineers who are responsible for sub-project activities. Working conditions:
  • Physical Demands: Required to sit or stand for long periods of time. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Travel: Domestic and international may be required as needed. The candidate will occasionally need to travel to multiple global locations to support project development. (10% annually and internationally every quarter).
