Job Description

Job Summary

Evaluate and treat patients through the use of therapeutic procedures intended to assess and improve communication and/or swallowing efficiency. The Speech Therapist practices in accordance with the State Practice Act. Age of Patient Population Served Birth, Infant, Pediatrics. Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric

Education:

  • Masters Speech Language Pathology Required
  • Degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Certifications, Licensures and Registrations

  • Certificate of Clinical Competency (CCC) in Speech Language Pathology American Speech Language Hearing Association Required*
  • Speech Therapy License North Carolina Required.
  • CPR certification American Heart Association
  • Required or must be in the process or completing the CCC within the current calendar year.
  • For IRC Only: CPI certification preferred

Experience:

  • 1 year of Speech Therapy preferred

Additional Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Demonstrated competency in applying the principles, methods, materials and equipment used in speech language pathology.
  • Demonstrated competency in identified areas of specialization, including training for age groups likely to be seen at this health
    system.
  • Ability to assess patient needs and develop and implement a comprehensive plan of care.
  • Excellent oral, written, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills preferred.
  • Computer skills required.

Job Specific Duties

  • Patient Assessment: Conducts and documents a thorough functional assessment of the patient in accordance with established protocols and policies.
  • Reviews available patient information and evaluates the impact of such information on the assessment and treatment process.
  • Patient Treatment Plan: Develops and implements an individualized treatment plan and functional goals, appropriate to the age and needs of the patient.
    Effectively prepares treatment environment to be safe and efficient, as well as utilizes proper body mechanics to ensure safety of the therapist and patient.
  • Performs appropriate treatments as ordered in a safe and effective manner in accordance with established departmental policy, including informing patients of potential risks during procedures. Documents the course of treatment in a clear concise format according to department policy.
  • Patient Discharge: Performs and documents discharge assessment and discharge plan in accordance with department standards and policy
    including adequate time frame for completion.
  • Supervision of Staff: Provides adequate supervision of licensed and non-licensed support staff ensuring that all regulatory requirements and department policies are met. Provides clinical supervision of students as assigned.
  • Customer Focus: Ensures excellent customer service to patients including excellent communication, treating them in a caring manner, being timely regarding treatment and being professional in their care. Communicates with physicians, other department/hospital staff and
    family members as needed regarding patient progress, problems and plans. Promotes rehab department to physicians, hospital and community in a positive manner at all times
  • Safety & Quality Improvement: Ensures equipment is safe and supplies are available for job performance. Participates in the quality improvement process as directed, such as data collection, documentation, satisfaction surveys.
  • Medicare: Follows Medicare documentation standards for appropriate setting.
  • Teamwork: Promotes a positive work environment with co-workers and other customers. Attends and participates in required department and hospital meetings and in-services. Provides clinical supervision of students as assigned. Participates in weekend, holiday and alternate area (inpatient/outpatient) coverage as required.

Physical and Behavior Requirements

  • Occasional kneeling, crawling, and reaching.
  • Frequent sitting, stooping, standing, and walking.
  • Light physical force is required (exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects).
  • Visual acuity is required for patient care.
  • Ability to speak and hear is required for patient assessment and to effectively communicate with patients, family members, physicians, and staff.
  • Sense of touch and manual finger dexterity is required for patient care and testing, and equipment use.
  • Ability to effectively manage a high stress environment resulting from varying census.
  • Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens
