SUMMARY: This position will assist and support the special education teacher, general education teacher, or related service providers who educate students with significant physical or impairment disabilities.

Job Responsibility Descriptions
  • Assist with the delivery of instructional activities as assigned and developed by certified or licensed professional practitioners. Implement communication devices or processes. Assist the teacher in implementing positive behavior plans and systems appropriate to the individual student.


  • Provide supervision during loading and unloading of buses, outside breaks, passing periods, and other out-of-classroom activities as assigned by the supervising teacher. Maintain line of sight supervision as needed.


  • Provide personal assistance to students which may include dispensing of medications, meal preparation, feeding or diapering. Assist with mobility and orientation of students.


  • Assist with informal documentation, prepare instructional materials and other clerical duties as requested. Assist in preparation, production, and maintenance of materials and equipment.


  • Assists teachers and other building staff in the execution of fire drills, shelter in place drills, lock-down, evacuation, and all other safety drills. Expectations include on-site presence and the ability to provide assistance to assigned students, other students and staff while maintaining order.


  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Associates degree; or successful completion of 48 credit hours of study at an institution of hiring education; or successful passing of the Work Keys Assessments testing required
  • Must successfully pass District approved lifting evaluation of 35 pounds upon hire
  • Minimum one year experience working directly with students who have significant disabilities
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATION:
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check at hire
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License
  • Small Vehicle Permit preferred
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention certification (CPI) must be obtained within 90 days of hiring
  • CPR Certification and general first aid training required within 30 days of hire

  • Ability to follow universal precautions for the maintenance of good health when working with students
  • Basic knowledge of effective behavior management techniques
  • Attend and successfully complete all staff development training as required by state law or as directed by the SPed Teacher and/or building Principal. Training includes but is not limited to how and when to administer medical procedures to students
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies and building and department procedures
  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and
    educational backgrounds
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator

    MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with normal Office software products at hire
  • Operating knowledge of the employee information and student database software programs within 6 months of hire
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, E-mail, etc.
