Job Description

The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity?

We’re building a new, greenfield platform to facilitate the release engineering of our hybrid cloud Kubernetes solution. You'll work with engineering teams across our products to solve challenging problems in the building, testing, and release of those products, focusing on tooling and infrastructure to accelerate our rate of development and release.

What is primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

We need someone who enjoys developing, to help us build a platform to build and test our products more reliably and to ultimately ship faster. Your work will cut across multiple products and multiple teams, with the goal of designing and constructing a single system that can be used across all of our Kubernetes solutions.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

Build a self-service testing framework for Kubernetes that supports 80% of our test cases.

Develop a production level good quality code in the API team

Decrease the average time to acquire a development or testing environment by 20%.

Work with individual engineering teams to deduplicate and centralize their overhead (e.g. consolidate disparate CI systems, unify test reporting, parallelize work on different components).

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

You will be writing high-quality code with excellent code coverage in Go and Python. You can expect to be the owner and take accountability for the quality of your code.

You’ll spend most of your time understanding how the various components of our products fit together with particular attention to how they’re built, tested, and released.

You’ll also engage with the upstream Kubernetes community to figure out how we can integrate our downstream testing and release efforts with those already being done upstream.

Work on reducing the footprint of each product and their infrastructure dependencies. Figure out ways to use our available hardware resources more efficiently.

Collaborate across teams to understand what work is duplicated and centralize that duplicated effort.

Build systems to help us identify what areas of the products are least robust, and work across teams to drive improvements.

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Kaiting Chen who manages the infrastructure, test platform, and image builder teams for the Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (TKG) product.

My management style relies heavily on leveraging the diverse and varied experiences of those on my teams and encouraging independent though and out of the box thinking. I believe that my approach is due to my own nontraditional journey: I studied biomedical engineering and economics, started in software as a technical support engineer, continued on a sales engineer, came to VMware as a software engineer, and became an engineering manager over time. To this end I tend to take a hands off approach on my teams, letting them decide for themselves what to work on and the best approach to take.

This role is on the TKG test platform team. Currently that team is composed of six engineers that work with in a very collaborative environment and split their attention upstream and downstream.
