We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with site reliability focus to help automate, maintain and scale our services, which are built upon a hybrid datacenter / cloud environment accepting over 70 billion HTTP requests a day from our customers. You will be at the heart of the teams supporting New Relic’s infrastructure and will work on a team that provides global service mesh and load balancing solutions. We provide these services on-premises, as well as using our multi-cloud infrastructure.

What You’ll Do

  • Work with a tier-1 gateway service that does Request routing, load balancing, protection from spikes, AuthN/AuthZ orchestration at the edge
  • Mitigate risk by improving SLIs and SLOs by altering, monitoring and scaling microservices and event-driven logging with a particular focus on providing a secure and reliable platform, ensuring engineers are paged when it matters and don’t get paged when it doesn’t
  • Partner with leadership, architects, and engineers to improve the availability and resiliency of our critical tier-one services, which can run up to 165k RPM
  • Reduce operational toil by working with the team to automate processes
  • Develop and promote Site Reliability Engineering principles, standards, and tooling, specifically with secure, high throughput processing in mind, and mentor other engineers in reliability-related skills
  • Host “game days” to test assumptions about reliability, build capacity plans and learn what will break before it matters to customers
  • Write runbooks and improve documentation
Your Qualifications

Must-have:

  • 5+ years building & shipping production software or supporting production software through DevOps or SRE roles
  • Experience with networking protocols, especially DNS, HTTP, TLS, BGP, and TCP.
  • You are comfortable automating with market tools (Terraform, Ansible) or integrating systems using a high-level language (Go, Python).
  • Experience working with distributed systems at high scale
  • Experience working on technically and organizationally complex projects with the ability to identify risks and weigh tradeoffs
  • High level of emotional intelligence with collaboration, communication and listening skills that encourage different perspectives and creative solutions
  • Experience mentoring engineers and leading by example

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience facilitating game days or chaos engineering experiments in large organizations
  • Some experience with Java
  • Exposure to a container orchestration system (Kubernetes, Mesos)
  • Experience with Global DNS Infrastructure (NS1, AWS Route 53), and CDN.
  • Experience with common load balancers, including F5s or public cloud.
  • Experience with AWS or other large network provisioning and architecture

How do you know if this is the right opportunity for you? At New Relic, we offer:

  • Large organizational scale (70+ engaged, collaborative and productive engineering teams)
  • Employee resource groups to support a diverse workforce
  • Communities of practice, connecting engineers with similar technical interests
  • Opportunity to work on a product that all your technical friends use
