Job Description

The Johnson and Johnson Law Department is recruiting for a Senior Patent Counsel to support clients located South San Francisco, CA. The position may be primarily located at this site or located at a Johnson & Johnson site in San Diego, CA area or the greater NJ/PA area. The position reports to an Assistant General Counsel, Patents.

The responsibilities of this position include representing and advising Johnson & Johnson’s pharmaceutical businesses and R&D units in the areas of patent law and strategy; drafting and prosecuting patent applications; drafting and negotiating transactional agreements; conducting third-party IP diligence; oversight of contractual corporate relationships; making presentations and engaging with the business regarding patent and intellectual property matters; and support in patent-related litigations. Specifically, the Senior Patent Counsel will be responsible for supporting the Infectious Diseases business of the Janssen operating companies.



Qualifications
  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree in a biological or chemical science. An advanced degree or laboratory experience is preferred.
  • A Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and an active registration, in good standing, with a state bar and as a USPTO registered patent attorney.
  • At least five years of experience drafting and prosecuting large molecule patent applications at a law firm or in-house legal department of a multinational corporation. Ability to provide patent support for small molecule pharmaceutical products would be a plus.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: rendering patentability and non-infringement opinions; supporting due diligence activities; and license/agreement drafting, negotiation and counseling.
  • Technical proficiency in one or more of the following areas is preferred: protein and nucleotide-based therapeutics, such as antibody, RNA, bacteriophage, and vaccine therapeutics.
  • At least two years of experience in license/agreement drafting, negotiation, and counseling is preferred.
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English, emotional intelligence, and ability to counsel senior management.
  • The ability to work independently and across business functions and cultures with teams across multiple time zones.
  • The ability to accommodate occasional overnight travel to domestic and international destinations.
