GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:Under general supervision and following established procedures, the Senior Technician assures the quality of service and monitoring for patients undergoing anesthesia in all anesthetizing locations throughout the hospital. Maintains, services, sets up, tests, and troubleshoots equipment and provides technical assistance to the Anesthesia staff in the care of patients. Assumes supervisory responsibility for the department on a daily basis in the absence of the Anesthesia Technician Supervisor.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Assists the anesthesia staff in the set up and initialization of hemodynamic monitoring equipment. 2. Assists anesthesiologists in care of patients before, during, and immediately after anesthesia which involves the following: Transfer of patients from stretchers to operating table; attachment of vital signs monitoring equipment; Positioning and hold patients for procedures, i.e spinal, epidurals; Assist in endotracheal intubations by preparing and holding equipment; Assist in transfer from operating room to PACU. 3. Conducts performance tests, performs calibration and first level repairs (i.e. battery changes, cable swapping, monitor checks) of anesthesia equipment. 4. Prepares blood pressure transducers. Calibrates them to the appropriate machine. Sets up IV solutions and IV infusions. 5. Sets up equipment for use in the work area such as, but not limited to, connecting input and output hoses, bronchoscopes, and assembling breathing circuits. Delivers required anesthesia equipment as needed. 6. Troubleshoots routine problems with equipment in OR during use, repairing or replacing as necessary. 7. Assist the Clinical Engineering group with various projects, including machine modification and data accumulation. 8. Ensures appropriate technical coverage by assigning staff appropriately and resolves operational problems with appropriate inter- and intra- departmental personnel in the absence of the supervisor. 9. Acts as a liaison to clinical support departments to ensure that all Anesthesia clinical needs are met in the most efficient and effective manner. 10. Takes responsibility for verifying timesheets for technical staff on any shift for which they provide supervisory coverage. 11. Assists supervisor in orientation and on-the-job training of employees. 12. Takes oncall rotation to provide technical support for surgical anesthesia. 13. Assumes other related duties as needed.
Associates degree in Science or equivalent education. In lieu of formal education, minimum of three years experience with equipment calibration, first level repairs, and testing and troubleshooting of clinical equipment may be considered. Prior supervisory and team building experience preferred (within an Operating Room setting is a plus). BCLS preferred, but training will be provided. Successful completion within the first 90 days of employment required. SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:Ability to follow detailed instructions. Knowledge of physical and mathematical principles. Good manual dexterity and ability to use common hand tools. Ability to think quickly and good judgment. Excellent visual acuity. Ability to work well under extreme pressure and stress. Good interpersonal skills. Ability to remain on feet for up to 80% of work time, lift and carry loads up to 25 pounds, and push rolling equipment weighing several hundred pounds. Ability to work in a hospital environment and deal closely and effectively with a variety of professional staff (physicians and nurses) up to 100% of work time. Experience with working in OR environment 100% of work time, including knowledge of appropriate conduct in an OR and familiarity with aseptic technique. WORKING CONDITIONS:High stress working conditions due to OR environment which may include the following: tight schedules, emergency surgery, and the critical nature of the care provided. Exposure to blood and secretions on contaminated equipment. Exposure to used hypodermic and spinal needles. Exposure to patients with undiagnosed disease. Exposure to narcotics and other addictive drugs.
