Job Description

General Scope and Summary

SAGE Therapeutics is searching for a creative, integrative thinker for a role driving biochemical and genetic biomarker strategy within the translational science group.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Execute translational science research strategies across Discovery and Development programs, applying expert knowledge of advanced principles, theories, and concepts in areas of expertise

  • Design and interpret translational science studies to evaluate drug candidates, investigate their therapeutic potential, identify biochemical and genetic biomarkers, and explore novel therapeutic hypotheses

  • Manage external CROs responsible for conducting translational science / biomarker experiments

  • Independently analyze and interpret data, make recommendations on next steps, and prepare presentations for translational science, pharmacology, and clinical teams, where appropriate

  • Integrate internal/external datasets and analyses; focus on integration of phenotypic datasets with biochemical/genetic readouts to inform clinical development endpoints and translational/biomarker strategies

  • Be an integral member of clinical development teams as a discovery/translational science representative

  • Develop collaborative relationships with key opinion leaders

  • Build relationships with academic collaborators and manage sponsored research agreements

  • Opportunity to lead cross functional drug discovery teams to bring therapeutic candidates to clinical development

  • Provides scientific and managerial leadership in areas of expertise

  • Develop and apply innovative approaches and technologies to translational science strategies supporting the progression of new therapies through clinical development

  • Think strategically about drug development and drive innovative solutions to key challenges across the organization

  • Establishes, monitors, and optimizes workflows to enable execution of studies across programs and departments

  • Prepare, review and deliver scientific presentations and reports/manuscripts for internal/external use

Experience, Education and Specialized Knowledge and Skills

The position requires excellent communication skills, and the ability and willingness to work effectively in a highly collaborative and matrixed research environment. Must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders, ability to identify issues and raise to key stakeholders to develop relevant and realistic plans, programs and recommendations needed.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D./MS/MA/BS/BA in Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Biomedical Science or related scientific discipline

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry with PhD; 6+ years of relevant experience with MS/MA or 8+ years of relevant experience with BS/BA

  • A strong and established scientific background in biochemistry, genetics, pharmacology, neuroscience, or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • A thorough understanding of PK-PD relationships and drug discovery processes is highly desirable.

  • A proven track record in progressing drug targets from validation to early clinical development is an asset.

  • Knowledge of programming languages such as R, Python, and MATLAB would be helpful, but not required

  • Experience with GraphPad Prism, E-Workbook, databases, and app development.

  • Demonstrated experience working with pre-clinical and clinical biospecimens.

  • Ability to conduct independent research and be a team player

  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities and be comfortable with changing direction and taking risks
