Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced pathology scientist to manage a new Translational/Discovery Research Pathology group in our San Diego site, supporting the company’s Oncology drug discovery and translational pathology efforts across multiple research units and sites. The primary responsibilities of the group are to collaborate with research scientists to support tissue-based target validation, animal model studies, and biomarker research from Discovery through Proof-of-Concept studies. Under the leadership of an MD pathologist, the group will provide pathobiology scientific expertise, diagnostic consultation, & histopathology technical support. Histotechnology technical support will include tissue procurement & specimen preparation from human sample collections and animal studies, sample preparation & sectioning, and development/application of novel IHC, ISH, and multiplex assays.

The successful candidate will manage the lab operations and personnel, design and execute pathobiology studies and collaborate/ communicate results to scientists and pathologists.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • On-site leadership of a group of pathology scientists, histotechnologists, and image analysis scientists engaged in designing pathobiology research, developing, and validating tissue-based assays, sourcing relevant human or animal sample sets, and obtaining research results to inform discovery stage to early clinical projects.

  • Collaborate with research scientists & design/execute/interpret pathobiology research projects together with MD pathologist senior director.

  • Lead technical development of novel assays, including multiplex IHC and IF assays.

  • Direct & execute histology procedures including formalin fixed tissue trimming, tissue processing and embedding, paraffin block and frozen tissue sectioning, H&E, IHC/mIF, and special stains.

  • Evaluate new pathology techniques & equipment for utility for lab’s work.

  • Manage project portfolio & workflow together with Senior Director.

  • Manage lab personal on-site in San Diego.

  • Write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintain accurate work documentation, and support assay transfers and cross-validation at CROs

  • Manage lab equipment scheduled maintenance and supply inventory.

  • Assist with maintenance of the tissue database.

Requirements:

BA in a scientific discipline with a required minimum of 12 years’ experience in histopathology & pathology science required; Master or PhD degree preferred. Experience in the biotech/diagnostic industry required & should include a strong track record of developing and deploying novel tissue-based assays (IHC, mIF, ISH) to support discovery/translational research by analyzing and interpreting data for project teams. Experience with histopathology techniques required, with experience in multiplex IF and image analysis a plus. Should be comfortable working with pathologists in designing and interpreting pathobiology research.

Prior experience in set up and management of industry research pathology labs a plus. Some experience managing small groups of pathology scientists and technicians required. Good written and oral communication skills are critical, including experience in designing and writing SOPs. The candidate will need to work well within a team and have strong interpersonal skills.
