Hours: Varied hours Monday-Friday, 7:30am-6:00pm

Location: Lisle, may have to float to other DMG locations based on business needs

SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Manager of Radiation Oncology and the clinical direction of the Radiation Oncology Medical Director, provides direct patient care and manages professional nursing care for patients having therapeutic services. Demonstrates excellence in nursing practice, appropriate independent judgment, and decision-making skills related to the Radiation Oncology patient. Assesses and monitors patient condition and initiates appropriate nursing interventions when necessary. Coordinates daily nursing care and functions as a liaison between physician, patient, family and facility, ensuring continuity of and quality of care. Maintains accurate and appropriate documentation and follows patient privacy in accordance with HIPPA and Boncura policies and procedures. Acts as role model for all other care givers in the coordination of patient care. Maintains a high level of iniative, dependability and motivation. Communicates effectively and exhibits sound judgement in patient safety and treats all individuals with professionalism and respect. Performs to the level of a licensed registered nurse as dictated by the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and Midwest Physician Administrative Services.

  • Handles, accesses, and discloses patient/Boncura information only as required in the performance of the job for treatment, payment or health operations in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, Boncura policies and procedures.
  • Takes steps and follows procedures to secure and safeguard patient and confidential information.
  • Never discusses confidential information in elevators or public areas.
  • Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Assists Provider in taking patient histories, obtaining vital signs, and preparing patient for routine exams or procedures, including collecting and processing specimens. Observes, records and reports the patient's condition and reaction to treatments and/or drugs.
  • Direct nursing care and procedures: administering medications, dressing changes and wound care, skin care, administering oxygen and monitoring oxygen saturation, suctioning patients, trach care, mouth care, care of IVs and central lines (blood drawing, flushing of Hickman catheters, infuse-a-port, Groshong's), venipuncture, bladder catheterization, assisting with various procedures; brachytherapy, etc; assisting with physical examinations and on treatment examinations.
  • Provides direct nursing care utilizing scientific knowledge, nursing theory and nursing skills in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the care of individualized patients.
  • Provides indirect nursing care through planning, guiding, evaluating, and directing care delivered by nursing and ancillary personnel as authorized.
  • Initiate appropriate laboratory, radiological and special examinations or tests required for the evaluation. Prepares and orders tests: fills out lab requisitions, test orders, patient forms and referral forms as per the Provider's request. Tracks and obtains all test results for Provider review; notifies patients of results as directed.
  • Responds to/refers incoming patient treatment-related phone calls. Triages patient messages and responds in accordance with departmental policy and procedures. May assist in arranging tests or admissions, calling in prescriptions, etc. Reviews and prioritizes same day messages.
  • Patient and family assessment and triage to physician when appropriate: consultation visit (complete Nursing Data Base), response to illness and treatment, side effects, current health problems, response to medications, and coping and adjustment problems.
  • Patient and family advocate: clarifications of physician's explanations, coordination of services, orientation to hospital and department systems, and patient charge information
  • Referrals: dietician, physical therapist, social worker, home care, Hospice, ostomy nurse, transportation coordinator, Oncology Department (coordination of chemo, blood transfusions, scheduling), financial counselor and ancillary services as indicated.
  • Patient/significant other education: general information related to diagnosis, radiation therapy, diet, skin care, potential and experience side effects, medications, radiation safety practices if needed, general health teaching, prevention and early detection teaching, acts as a resource person to nursing personnel, and maintains updated knowledge of current trends in Radiation Oncology
  • Provides patient/SO education and explanations of procedures being performed. Explains waiting times in excess of established protocols.
  • Evaluate patients and families regarding development, coping ability and emotional and social well-being.
  • Consults and collaborates with other members of the health care team to assure patient needs are met and that there is effective and efficient continuity of care.
  • Assists other employees by answering questions regarding scheduling, medical diagnoses and general information necessary for a smooth patient flow and professional office environment.
  • Completes all necessary documentation including charges to assure proper billing and legal documentation.
  • Will perform all other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

EDUCATION and / or CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

  • Current license to practice in the State of Illinois as a professional nurse. Minimum of two (2) years oncology, ACLS, OCN preferred.
  • Obtains continuing educations credits as required
  • Maintains CPR certification

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum two years of current clinical experience in order to acquire a thorough knowledge of scientific principles of nursing; acquire a thorough knowledge of professional nursing standards; and, develop skill in nursing techniques and the ability to adapt techniques to individual patient needs.
