About The East Carolina Heart Institute

The East Carolina Heart Institute is the first in North Carolina devoted exclusively to education, research, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The institute is associated with Vidant Medical Center and East Carolina University. The primary facilities that make up the Heart Institute are located on the campuses of Vidant Medical Center and ECU’s Brody School of Medicine. We use the most advanced equipment and techniques to manage both familiar and rare cardiovascular problems. Our integration of basic science and clinical research, along with the clinical practice of medicine and surgery, ensures that patients receive the latest, most promising treatment options based on thorough review of their individual needs.

Position Summary

68 bed unit providing Cardiac intermediate level care and general level that supports for the Cardiac Medicine population. Patients in this setting may require frequent assessments and collaborative evaluations to manage intermediate care status and general status. Continuity of care is facilitated in this unit through transition for optimization of clinical outcomes. The population will include but is not limited to:

  • Myocardial Infarction (S/P STEMI, NSTEMI)
  • S/P Cardiac Arrest
  • Coronary Artery Disease Management (Pre/post Cardiac Cath with/without intervention, pre Cardiac Surgery)
  • Cardiac Arrhythmia Management (Medication and Device)
  • Acute Heart Failure Management (Medication and Device)


CIU staff collaborate with the ECHI medicine service that is comprised of a Hospitalist and Advanced Practice staff (PAs and FNPs) with Cardiology consulting and ECU Cardiology (Academic service made up of Residents, Interns, Fellows and Attending’s) providing medical coverage for our patients and is available 24/7.

Skills that will be utilized are interpretation of complex cardiac rhythms and 12 lead EKG change recognition, arterial lines, central lines, IV start skills, peripheral lab draws, arterial blood draws, various vasoactive intravenous drips with titration, conscious sedation management, sheath pulling (arterial & venous), 12 lead EKG performance, bedside procedures, BiPap and cardiac monitoring.



Staffing/Scheduling:
  • RN ratio for Intermediate beds 1:4 and General Cardiology Beds 6:2 (RN/Nursing Assistant Team Model)

  • Charge Staff without a patient assignment

  • Float Nurse as scheduling allows

  • Flexible scheduling options with self-scheduling

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate Degree is required.

  • Bachelors Degree is preferred.

  • Current NC RN license or licensure to practice in a participating Nurse Licensure Compact state Health Care Provider is required.

  • Basic Life Support is required.
