Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited respiratory care program – CoARC (The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care).
  • Five years of critical care or advanced respiratory experience.
  • Supervisory experience and additional skill sets may be considered for the minimal requirement.
  • Certification in two advance certifications (ACLS, PALS and NRP) or one advance certification and one specialized certification (AEC, COPD, SCC, etc.) relevant to department operations or must be obtained within one year from date of hire. A Bachelors Degree, advanced credential (ACCS, NPS, RPFT, CPFT or SDS) or must obtain either within one year from date of hire.
  • Valid/current license from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Respiratory Therapist by Start Date


Job Responsibilities

  • Integrates knowledge, skill and experience to promote optimum care for the patient.
  • Integrates patient diagnostic data, response-to-therapy, and the physiologic profile to create a plan-of-care that is sound and consistent with the department standard-of-care.
  • Performs thorough, advanced cardiopulmonary clinical assessments, with appropriate inclusion of other system (e.g., cardiovascular, nutritional, neurologic, etc.).
  • Administers basic and advanced respiratory therapeutic interventions (e.g., heliox, nitric oxide, CNB, Chest Wall Oscillation, etc.) with high proficiency and virtually no supervision.
  • Establishes and manages basic and the more complex forms of mechanical ventilation (e.g., HFO, NPPV, PRVC, transport) with high proficiency and minimal supervision.
  • Displays proficiency in operating all mechanical ventilators used in-house.
  • Adapts staffing and resource allocation to maximize care and minimize problems/complications.
  • Anticipates problems and resolves issues before they occur/expand, actively works to minimize conflict and reduce occurrence.
  • Serves as a mentor and teacher of clinical staff.
  • Takes ownership for skills of clinical staff. Develops and advances clinical skills of staff on shift and routinely evaluates performance.
  • Addresses and resolves problems in a manner that is consistent with hospital and departmental policy.
  • Seeks ways to consistently assist other members of the healthcare team.
  • Receives at least one validated commendation from co-workers, physicians, nurse and supervisor during the evaluation year.
  • Communicates with healthcare members on the care plan, in a manner consistent with the Inova standards.
  • Completes at least 16 non-mandatory continuing education units and provides documented evidence to the department for the evaluation year. Successfully
  • Completes all of the departmental, hospital and system competencies required for job category with the designated time frame.
  • Supports the advancement of the respiratory care profession by leading at least two system, hospital, department, or professional initiatives (policies/procedures, research, formal in-service training, skills lab, competencies, etc.) during the evaluation year.
  • Incorporates data and information to continually improve care and practice to enhance outcome.
  • Participates with Quality Improvement, direct observation, medical record review, testing.
  • Applies departmental protocols and clinical practice guidelines with high precision and compliance when indicated, and does so without supervision.
  • Applies new techniques and procedures with high proficiency within 30 days of training/orientation.
  • Understands the value of QI, the tools used, performance indicators of QI.
  • Performs data capturing/analysis and is involved in learning and statistical analysis.
  • Displays knowledge in most aspects of QI. Assists others within the department by guiding them on quality and lean projects.
  • Records routinely (>90%) data for the Quality Improvement processes with the department (i.e., SBT screening, ARDS/ALI screening, PDP bronchodilator assessment).
  • Works with Respiratory Leadership Team to develop and implement departmental education, quality, staffing and environment of care plans.
  • Insures all departmental services are delivered in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are maintained to provide all department services.
  • Works with Respiratory Leadership Team to monitor expense and billing reports to ensure accuracy. Notes discrepancies and takes needed corrective action.
  • Provides input to the Respiratory Leadership Team and assists in coordinating/administering of probationary/discipline reviews within department.
  • Assists Respiratory Leadership Team with budget preparation and implementation as needed. Performs internal audits and prepares monthly financial/statistical reports in coordination with Respiratory Leadership when needed.
  • Evaluates routine and new products with outside vendors and makes purchasing recommendations to the Respiratory Leadership Team.
  • Conducts performance evaluations in coordination and approval of Respiratory Leadership Team. Attends system and facility meetings as required.
