The MGH Cancer Center Resource Practice Nurse (RPN) works collaboratively with the Nurse Director to provide support and leadership to the practice nurses in the Cancer Center specialty clinics. The RPN will work collaboratively to provide support of the daily clinic operations, which includes but is not limited to; staff scheduling, vacation requests, direct and indirect patient care as needed and to ensure compliance with established Infection Control practices at MGH and the Cancer Center. The RPN conveys a positive and professional image and represents the staff and the patients they care for in a professional, courteous and efficient manner. The RPN assists in facilitating a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to achieve optimal patient outcomes and supports the mission, philosophy, standards, goals and objectives of MGH and the Cancer Center.


  • Demonstrates awareness & recognition of the daily operations of the clinic, providing support to clinic staff by assessing, & evaluating the needs of the clinic.
  • Acts as a professional role model to all levels of staff by incorporating critical thinking, & problem- solving skills within their scope as RPN.
  • Provides coverage for indirect/direct patient care, if needed, to support clinical operations and the clinic team.
  • Evaluates daily staffing and adjusts as needed.
  • Manages staff vacation requests and ensures adequate clinic coverage.
  • Assists nurse director with interviewing and onboarding of new hires.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills with MGH and Cancer Center patients and colleagues.

  • Fosters an environment that promotes patient, family, physician, & staff satisfaction, & communicates issues & concerns to ND.
  • Proactively seeks and acts upon patient, families and staff feedback and initiates appropriate action.
  • Interprets and enforces with staff and others the appropriate use of equipment, supplies, and physical facilities
  • Acts as the resource to clinical staff and providers, problem solves, uses critical thinking skills to ensure MGH and Cancer Center standards are being met.
  • Fosters professional and educational growth of practice nurses such as certification and clinical ladder.
  • Collaboration

  • Leads staff to develop collaborative working relationships within the cancer center and with other departments as applicable.
  • Acts as a liaison to infusion nursing, research pharmacy, and laboratory as needed to ensure effective clinical operations for the specialty clinics.
  • Participates in Committee meetings as assigned/requested.
  • Collaborates with ND to implement process improvement initiatives.

  • Maintains necessary clinical skills through self-directed clinical practice
  • Establishes self as a resource for other areas where expertise may be required.

Demonstrates clinical competence in the area of oncology nursing

Demonstrates strong communication and collaboration skills to foster an effective partnership with faculty, staff and both internal and external stakeholders.

Ability to work with diverse groups of people


Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Baccalaureate degree required.

OCN certification preferred

Ambulatory oncology nursing experience required
