Job Description

Role Summary:
Perform research of a highly complex nature. Lead research projects and perform near to totally independent research. Exercise discretion and independent judgment to develop design of research to test hypotheses. Devise new or modify existing methods and develop procedures to meet new conditions.

Pancreatic islets are highly specialized mini-organs that regulate blood glucose by secreting insulin, glucagon, and other hormones in response to physiologic stimuli such as glucose. A deficiency or a dysfunction of the insulin-producing ? cells of the islet is critical to the development of all forms of diabetes. The Powers & Brissova group is working to understand and reverse ? cell and islet abnormalities and dysfunction in diabetes. In our projects, we are studying the pathogenesis of human diabetes by conducting, translating, and integrating studies about the human pancreas and islet biology. Our research team of scientists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, medical students, undergraduate students, and research assistants has interdisciplinary collaborations with vascular biologists, developmental biologists, biomedical engineers, chemists, and bioinformaticians at Vanderbilt and around the world. Department Summary:

The Division has over 20 faculty and over 50 staff members, who participate in a wide-range of clinical programs and clinical and basic science research. Training the next generation of physicians and scientists is a major part of our mission and involves an Endocrinology Training Program and a Medical Student Research Program.

The Division provides in-patient and out-patient care at two hospitals, Vanderbilt University Hospital and the Nashville Veterans Administration Hospital. We strive for excellence in patient care, and this has been recognized by our ranking as one of the best programs in Diabetes and Endocrinology by the US News and World Report.

Investigators in the Division conduct biomedical research ranging from laboratory-based to clinical investigation to outcomes and quality research. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Independently oversee research projects and perform near to totally independent research.
  • Supervise, plan, design and implement research projects
  • Establish protocol(s); define data collection, evaluation and analysis procedures
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment to develop methods and procedures for operation of complex scientific equipment
  • Supervise set-up and operation of various scientific experiments involving complex apparatus and equipment
  • Contribute to research so as to merit serving as author or co-author on research publications, etc.
  • Assist principal investigator in preparation of grant applications and contract proposals
  • Present research findings as needed
  • Responsible for plan and coordination of literature and library searches and data collection programs
  • Develop reports of results, graphs, charts, tables, etc. of research findings
  • Supervise writing, reviewing and editing of various materials for publication
  • Provide supervisory responsibility to staff
  • Train and supervise technical staff, medical and graduate students
  • Provide technical guidance to students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty as required
  • Provide budget responsibility
  • Make recommendations to principal investigator regarding staff, supply and equipment needs for research projects
  • May monitor expenditures of funds
  • Maintain open communication between department and others
  • Open contact as needed with principal investigator, collaborating professionals, Purchasing, Human Resource Services, Space and Facilities Planning, asset management personnel, Environmental Health and Safety, Institutional Review Board staff, administrative staff relating to budget capabilities
  • Contact as required with sponsoring agencies and/or cooperating facilities (e.g. V.A.), collaborating professionals and vendors
  • Other duties as assigned by Leadership.
