Job Description

The RA will assist the Principal Investigators (PIs) with the operation of multiple studies related to sexual and mental health among adolescents and young adults, including:

  • writing up results from an online sexual health intervention for US adolescent sexual minority males
  • assisting on a study about the role that minor consent laws play in HIV/STI testing, treatment, and prevention among US adolescents
  • assisting on a study investigating the impact of COVID-19 on the sexual health of adolescents across the US
  • assisting on a study about social media, body image, and mental health among transgender young adults.

Research Assistant duties include:

  • maintaining study-related social media accounts; recruiting study participants using social media
  • collecting, cleaning, entering, managing, and analyzing data (both quantitative and qualitative)
  • assisting with development and maintenance of study protocols, forms, and assessments
  • assisting with development of a social media literacy intervention
  • assisting with correspondence and other materials needed for audits, and reporting to sponsor.

The study team is in the Department of Community Health Sciences at Boston University School of Public Health. The RA will work with students and other RAs at BU. The RA will assist the PIs with literature reviews and have opportunities for authorship on academic publications and presentations.


Required Skills


Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years of experience. Cover letter required. Candidates should have an interest in public health and/or clinical research. Specific interest in HIV, sexual health, mental health and substance use, adolescent and young adult health, and/or sexual and gender minority health is a plus.


Candidates should be:

  • highly organized and attentive to detail
  • interpersonally skilled, warm, empathic
  • highly efficient across a range of tasks and studies
  • able to work effectively both independently and in a team
  • have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • have strong computer skills (e.g., Word, Excel).

Experience with:

  • behavioral research in a clinic or a public health setting (this experience can be part of educational preparation)
  • REDCap programming
  • social media advertising and platforms and/or
  • NVivo programming are a plus.
