    General Description of the Position:
    The Registered Nurse Specialist for Students provides excellent health care that improves the school experience for children aged 3-18 in sites and school aged settings in the Heron Creek Therapeutic School program. Duties include caring for students by providing first aid treatment, creating and maintaining accurate records, administering medication and monitoring for side effects, recording vital signs, and reporting symptoms and changes in patient conditions.

    About Heron Creek:
    The Heron Creek Programs assess the collective strengths of students, families, schools and the community to develop collaborative plans, enabling students with significant social, emotional, behavioral and academic challenges to learn and use skills to meet their educational goals in the least restrictive environment. The Heron Creek Programs will be differentiated from behavioral classrooms in the inclusive approach of the team. The programs are evidence-based with an emphasis on family participation; integration of education and school based mental health service throughout the day, as well as the maintenance of continuous connections between the student, family and local school district personnel. The program will emphasize strengths-based assessment and collaboration with local systems of care.

    Essential Functions:
    1. To assess the health needs of learners by:
    • determining the extent of the health assessment required through record review and parent consultation.
    • obtaining a health history from medical records and student/parent interview.
    • evaluating the student’s current health status through physical assessment and student/parent interview.
    • obtaining current medical information and orders from the student’s health care provider.

    2. To facilitate health services for identified students by:
    • developing a Student Health Management Plan (SHMP) and providing a summary of health information including recommendations based on physician’s orders which may include a nursing care plan, emergency plans, delegation or assignment to school staff, transportation plans, IEP goals (which may include teaching classroom staff to observe and report signs of identified concern to the R. N.)
    • updating student health status, identified health concerns, goals, and placement to determine if progress has been made, and health information is current, consulting with health care providers/parents to modify medical treatment and nursing management as needed.

    3. Complete vision and hearing screenings annually, or arranging for their completion through outside agencies
    4. Act as liaison between parents, teachers, community agencies and medical providers, as needed, to ensure effective communication and make recommendations regarding the nature, scope and intensity of services that will provide a safe school environment in the least restrictive environment for student in assigned districts.
    5. Participate in multidisciplinary team and make appropriate recommendations regarding student health/educational plans for IFSP/IEP.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Valid Oregon license to practice as a Registered Nurse
    • Minimum of two years’ experience working in a school/clinical setting with children
    • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related area (nutrition, nursing, community health, et cetera)
    • Familiarity with community, state and federal health care resources, and ability to link families with these resources
    • Ability to support and train educators in a variety of ways including in-service training, on-site modeling, coaching, technical assistance, phone consultation, establishing a mentor relationship, or by guidance to professional resources in the community
