Job Description
The Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Technologist is responsible to assist in the performance of invasive testing and interventional procedures used in the detection and treatment of the heart and circulatory system within Cardiac Catheter, CTO and Structural Heart procedure rooms. RCIS Technologists must be able to be proficient in the functions of Monitoring, Circulating and Scrubbing. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Demonstrates understanding of Cardiac, Vascular, Respiratory, and Renal, physiology and pathology.2. Adheres to the principles of medical ethics as applied to the role of the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Technologist.3. Demonstrates thorough understanding of ECG and related medical terminology.4. Recognizes ECG waveform morphology, wave patterns and their significance, including lethal arrhythmias.5. Recognize and interpret ECG changes occurring in heart chamber enlargement and myocardial infarctions and is able to respond appropriately. (ACLS)6. List and describe the most common cardiac pathologies, including symptoms and treatments.7. Demonstrate an understanding of all of the Cardiac medications (Generic & Trade names) and the pharmacokinetics actions related to cardiac and vascular functions and properly documents the medications including indications for administration and dosages.8. Recognizes and alerts physicians to abnormalities with clinical laboratory values for Arterial Blood Gases, electrolytes, hemoglobin, BUN and creatinine.9. Demonstrates knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and is able to perform all components for a RCIS Tech. for a patient undergoing a full cardiac arrest.10. Monitors a diagnostic cardiac catheter procedure.11. Intervenes appropriately during and after a lethal arrhythmia using ACLS standards if warranted.12. Identities coronary anatomy in cine angiographic projections.13. Identify cardiac pressure waveforms and informs Interventional Cardiologist when applicable. Calculates basic hemodynamic parameters using the recording computer.14. Records catheterization events in the database computer.15. Understands the necessary supplies required, can provide them and set up a table to perform a diagnostic cardiac catheterization.16. Describes the fundamental steps in a diagnostic heart catheterization and monitors a patient safely during the procedure.17. Performs cardiac outputs, O2 saturations and ACT (Activated Clotting Time) measurements.18. Monitors a percutaneous intervention and can differentiate between a PTCA, directional and mechanical rotation atherectomy. Full understanding of all extraction devices such as angiojet, rotoblator and laser revascularization devices.19. Ability to explain the indication and potential complications of thrombolytic therapy for Acute MI.20. Identify the benefits of supplementing angiographic imaging with intravascular ultrasound and Doppler velocimetry technologies.21. Describe the indications for electrophysiologic testing, permanent pacemaker implant, and therapeutic ablation of dysrhythmias and implantable cardioverter defibrillators.22. Ability to identify the main components of our Cath. Lab fluoroscopy system and gain the ability to utilize all of the necessary components to ensure that the Physician has the appropriate visibility to perform the procedure.23. Demonstrates and adheres to the Radiation Safety protocols by ensuring that all policies are adhered to. Leads will be worn and cleaned and dosing badges must be worn at all times in the room.24. Demonstrates a full understanding of Sterile Technique and is capable of scrubbing, prepping, draping and setting up a table for a cardiac catheterization, CTO, and Structural Heart procedure.25. Demonstrates a full knowledge base and can describe angiographic techniques specific to RAO, LAO, Cranial and Caudal angulations.26. Demonstrates a full knowledge base and can describe a left ventriculography, aortography, peripheral and coronary arteriography.27. Describe percutaneous intervention techniques for aortic aneurysm, renal artery stenosis, lower extremity peripheral artery disease, deep vein thrombosis, arteriovenous fistula thrombosis, carotid artery stenosis and acute stroke intervention.28. Demonstrates the operation of endovascular stents, vena cava filters, excisional atherectomy devices, excimer laser and rheolytic thrombectomy systems.29. Demonstrates the ability to perform all three functions as a Monitor, Circulator and Scrubbing Assistant for all procedures performed within the HFH Cardiac Cath., CTO’s and Structural Heart procedure rooms.30. Performs "Point of Care" WAVE testing per hospital policy. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
  • Registered Cardiovascular Interventional Technologist.
  • Must be from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied
  • Health Education Program. (CAAHEP).
  • Maintain a BLS and ACLS certificate.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Ability to scrub in a sterile environment for an undetermined amount of time.
  • Ability to wear lead aprons weighing up to 5 lbs. for an undetermined amount of time.
  • With team assistance as needed, the employee must have the ability to lift patients to and from a stretcher/bed to a procedure table.
  • With team assistance as needed, the employee must have the ability to push a bed or stretcher with an immobilized patient on it.
