Job Description

Summit is looking for a Regional Human Resources Director to join our Enterprise Human Resources team. The candidate will be in Houston, Texas or is willing to relocate to Houston, Texas. The Regional HR Director will lead and facilitate the development of a highly effective, strategic HR function in their respective region. This role will facilitate the delivery of key HR services and infrastructure in line with Summit Material’s people strategy for efficient & effective services throughout the organization.

Position Overview:

The Regional HR Director will lead and facilitate the development of a highly effective, strategic HR function in their respective region. This role ensures their region has the structure, culture and talent needed to deliver on organizational goals. This role will facilitate the delivery of key HR services and infrastructure in line with Summit Material’s people strategy for efficient & effective services throughout the organization. This role will drive implementation and adaptation of organizational HR initiatives and practices across their region. The regional HR Director serves as advisor and counsel to maximize staffing resources and performance, ensures scalability, sustainability and efficiency of work processes and HR support. Lead and execute a series of HR programs such as Benefits, Compensation, Onboarding, Talent Acquisition, Succession Plan, Performance Management.


Responsibilities:

  • HR Advocacy - Position HR as the conscience of the company by reinforcing the culture and taking a proactive approach to supporting and promoting our culture.
  • Recruiting/Staffing - Partner with Leaders to concentrate on recruiting efforts in needed markets. Partner with Talent Acquisition to coordinate and/or participate in recruiting events for positions and assessments. Monitor and analyze turnover and work with business partners to maintain performance of employees.
  • Performance Management & Development/Training - Assess needs and partner with leaders to implement consistent strategies relating to development. Support performance management process to ensure continuous improvement and the implementation of best practices. Partner with leaders to build high performing leadership teams and to create an environment which is clear on performance management. Build organizational capability through the development and implementation of programs designed to create and build a culture of stellar leaders aimed at achieving an end result of excellence in employee effectiveness and engagement. Develop members of own regional team.
  • Employee Relations - Oversee employee relations issues and investigations, including corrective action, performance management and succession planning. In partnership with Legal, manage the investigation of unfair treatment/discrimination charges, harassment complaints, wrongful terminations, wage/hour issues and other potential employee relations issues. Monitor and analyze employee retention and other HR metrics and develop appropriate action plans to address identified needs. Providing HR support and execute on the day-to-day HR operations needed supporting employees and managers. Support collective bargaining and labor relations if applicable in the region.
  • Policy/Strategy - Partner in the development and implementation of HR policies and procedures, including the creation and delivery of training/communication programs as needed.
  • Communication - Provide information to the business in a timely and effective manner. Utilize systems to ensure effective and appropriate reports are available to analyze business needs and act proactively to impact change.
  • Health & Safety – Visible advocate and steward of our Safety culture. Partners strongly with regional Safety leadership to support culture initiatives – Our Journey to Zero.


Desired Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Human Resources, or similar field.
  • 6-10 years of large regional HR experience with organization at or over 1200+ employers over multiple locations.
  • HR certifications such as PHR, SPHR or SHRM-CP are highly desired.
  • Ability to travel as necessary (max 50%).
  • Knowledge of state & federal laws
  • Recruiting, interviewing, and coaching/counseling skills, and strong training/presentation skills.
  • High level of business/financial acumen.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, decision making, development/planning, performance gap analysis and conflict management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, as well as champion change.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software required.
  • Demonstrated leadership, strong personal presence, demonstrates initiative, is results-oriented, and acts with a sense of urgency.
  • Excellent knowledge of culture, HR best practices and industry standards.
  • Experience establishing relationships as a trusted advisor to senior leaders and a safe space for employee needs.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • High drive for results and discipline in execution.
  • Creativity: love to solve problems large and small.
