Job Description
Recreational Therapist

Under the Supervision of the Recreational Supervisor, the Recreational Therapist is responsible for the coordination and planning of the therapeutic and recreational activities for the participants of the PACE program.


Specifications

Education and Special Training: BS degree in Recreation Therapy or BA from an accredited college with an emphasis in recreation for special populations.

Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in social or recreational program providing and coordinating services for an aging, frail and/or elderly population within the past 5 years.

Licensure, Registry or Certification Required: Licensed in North Carolina (NC) as RT. Valid NC driver’s license and vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must be able to work effectively in a team environment. Working knowledge and understanding of psychosocial problems of aging. Only act within the scope of his or her authority to practice. Meet a standardized set of competencies for the specific position description established by PACE of Guilford and Rockingham Counties and approved by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) before working independently.

With or without reasonable accommodations: Ability to bend and/or stoop frequently; Have independent mobility in order to climb stairs and walk distances; Lift and carry pieces of durable medical equipment; Utilize correct body mechanics; Read, write and speak in English; Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to clearly see medical records and various documents; Ability to perform repetitive hand/wrist movements.


Key Responsibilities

  • Builds within the Center a sense of community and a warm social atmosphere in which participants are able to identify a support system.
  • Conducts an initial assessment and scheduled reassessments of all participants in accordance with the IDT policy. Assessments must be completed prior to scheduled interdisciplinary team (IDT) conferences. Communicates participant changes with team members.
  • Coordinates 24 hour care delivery.
  • Develops specific therapeutic programs as part of the plan of care to include recreational and social activities.
  • Records, signs, and dates progress reports in the participant’s medical record.
  • Collaborates with activity staff regarding group and individual activity planning.
  • Serves as a resource to staff and assists with coordinating volunteer activities in the Adult Day Health Center.
  • Under the supervision of the RT Coordinator, assists with planning and carrying out RT duties within budget established for the RT program.
  • Participates as an active member of the IDT. Takes part in participant care planning.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities as appropriate.
  • Coordinates with various community resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Environmental Factors

Tasks with potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisting participants with non-intact skin
  • Assisting incontinent participants
