Job Description
Job Summary

Serves as support to The REC, Active Adults, athletics, aquatics, outdoor recreation classes/camps, Lake Parks and/or special events.

Essential Functions

  • Attends to the daily operation of facilities and programs including opening and closing duties and directs RCA I when necessary; assists with various recreation programs, leagues and special events.
  • Assists with program registrations, including periods of intensive computer processing with custom registration system.
  • Assists with program and event set up, tear down and implementation including working both inside and outside in various locations and conditions.
  • Provides excellent customer service by responding to customers' questions and needs.
  • Performs and oversees the general maintenance and housekeeping duties in Parks and Recreation Department facilities and/or Grapevine/Colleyville Independent School District facilities.
  • Ensures the safety of all spectators and participants in programs and facilities; ensures that safety protocols are being adhered to.
  • Completes various reports and submits them to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
  • Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
  • Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.

When assigned to Indoor Summer Camp Counselor:
  • Responsible for the daily operations of The REC's summer camp which will include coordinating and implementing recreational activities for youth ages 7-12 years along with a monthly field trip.
  • Directs and assists all RCA I Camp Counselors.
  • Provides customer service at the front desk of The REC and/or attend to the daily operations of the facility, program registrations, assist members, and monitor the facility as needed.
  • 4.Responsible for preparing snacks and administering first aid.

When assigned to Outdoor Summer Camp Counselor:
  • Supervision of daily operations and implementations of seasonal day camp to ensure needs & interests of participants are met in a safe & quality manner.
  • Oversee implementation of recreational programs and activities for children K-5th grades.
  • Give direction to staff to accomplish daily camp activities.

Required Skills

High school diploma, GED and 18 years of age or 2 years full-time equivalent experience as a RCA I or Instructor required. Ability to use a calculator and do basic math functions. Ability to perform cash handling duties and demonstrate an understanding of proper cash handling procedures. Must have good written and oral communication skills and be able to deal effectively with the public. Must be able to demonstrate excellent customer service skills. Must have physical ability to accomplish job tasks and work outdoors as required. Incumbent must pass a Federal/National criminal background check and have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.

When assigned to Athletics:

May be required to have some knowledge of general sport rules (basketball, softball, volleyball, football) Must be able to obtain a Food Handlers certification within three months of hire. Must have general knowledge of concession and food preparation. Must be able to operate a cash register, scoreboard or computer.
When assigned to The REC:must be comfortable working in Windows based computer system and will be required to demonstrate efficient computer processing skills within six weeks of hire. RCA II's serving as Summer Camp Counselor are not required to have a driver's license. When assigned to the Special Events/Recreation/Outdoor or Lake Parks Program Areas:
  • Must be able to work various times and be available nights, weekends and some holidays.
  • Must have physical ability to load, move and/or set up tables, chairs and various equipment needed for the camp, event or class.
  • Ability to lead/coordinate youth, staff and volunteers preferred.
  • Creative individuals with various skills in the arts used for program, marketing and event development will also be considered.

When assigned to the Lake Parks Program Areas:
  • Must be able to oversee daily operations of seasonal day camps to ensure needs and interests of participants are met in a safe and quality manner.
  • Must be able to oversee the implementation of recreational programs and activities for children K-5th grades.
  • Must have or obtain American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR, First Aid and AED certification before the first week of camp or 1 week before being placed on the work schedule.

When assigned to Indoor Summer Camp Counselor:
  • Must be able to set-up and take down tables/chairs/equipment for various activities.
  • Occasional nights and weekends may be required.
  • Must have 3-6 months of experience working with children.
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with parents and youth.
  • Must be able to demonstrate excellent customer service skills, creativity, proficient computer skills, and leadership qualities.
  • Must have physical ability to accomplish job task, lift up to 50 lbs. and able to work outdoors as required.
  • Prefer at least 2 years of completed college work with an emphasis in Recreation and Leisure Services.

When assigned to Outdoor Summer Camp Counselor:
  • Prefer applicant pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in parks, recreation, leisure, human development or related field.
  • Candidate must have basic knowledge outdoor recreation skills.
  • Must be able to work various times and be available during the summer months and some holidays.
  • Must have physical ability to load, move and/or set up tables, chairs and various equipment needed for the camp.
  • Ability to lead/coordinate youth and staff preferred.
  • Creative individuals with various skills in the arts used for program, marketing and event development will also be considered.
  • Must have or obtain American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications before the first week of camp or 1 week before being placed on the work schedule.
