Overview

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Our diverse capabilities span a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace.

We are seeking a professional to fill a Research and Development Staff position in the Integrated Building Deployment and Analysis Group in the Buildings and Transportation Sciences Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate at ORNL. The group consists of a team of highly motivated researchers conducting research in world-class facilities. The work supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing advanced building equipment for energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, equipment-to-grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance. This position requires working with external partners, corporations, and sponsors to develop and deploy these technologies. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education.

Major Duties / Responsibilities

You will be the principal investigator for projects related to device level and whole building control of energy systems to achieve lower carbon emissions, lower energy costs to address energy justice, and grid resilience. Major responsibilities consist of the following:

  • Leading major projects, including overseeing the work of junior researchers, post-docs, and technicians; responsible for achieving milestones on time and within budget.
  • Oversight for the development of software requirements, architecture and design, construction, and testing of software.
  • Using applicable tools, including in-house and commercially available programs, to create real-world scenarios for controlling building loads to reduce energy and emissions during periods of peak demand or reduced output from renewable resources.
  • Responsible for writing, testing, debugging/troubleshooting, and maintenance of specialized programs and applications.
  • Developing research proposals to major funding agencies.
  • Presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals.

Basic Qualifications

You will have earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field. Research and development experience (including postdoctoral, other academic, research fellow, and/or industry) is preferred, especially in the fields of machine learning, simulation, and software development.

  • You must be fluent in Linux and Windows, and extensive programming skills in C, C++, Python, and Matlab experience with a demonstrated ability to use design patterns and software engineering best practices for scalable, reliable, rapid implementation.
  • Previous experience with simulation-based testing is required.
  • Excellent communications skills for visualization and presentation of methodology, results, and demonstrations are required.
  • The ability to work well with others, and have the ability to independently identify and solve challenging technical problems is required.
  • You must demonstrate a strong commitment to ethical and professional values as well as maintain a compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality standards.

Preferred Qualifications

You should have the ability to lead teams of engineers and technicians to successfully design and implement advanced whole building and device level control systems. Excellent interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership are required. The ability to develop and/or maintain strong relationships through active participation in building industry organizations and events is required. Finally, you should have a proven publication/patent record. For more information, please contact Melissa Lapsa (lapsamv@ornl.gov).

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
