We are looking for an early career engineer with interest in working with inertial sensors and inertial measurement units (IMU) and their use in inertial navigation systems, event detection components, and precise gimbal-controlled applications. The engineer will be called upon to perform activities related to the validation, testing, and characterization of these sensors and will support the organization’s multiple programs. Testing activities include collecting and analyzing data from lab calibration equipment, thermal and mechanical environments (vibration, shock, and centrifuge). Additionally, the engineer will be involved in the design, test and delivery of embedded electronics systems that utilize inertial sensors and navigational aiding sensors.

Qualifications We Require
  • MS in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or related STEM field
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex concepts and solutions to team members
  • MATLAB programming for utilizing/modifying or upgrading existing data analysis tools
  • Signal processing background
  • Active OR the ability to obtain a DOE Q level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire
  • Programming experience with developing software for instrument control
  • Electronics development experience
  • Understanding of inertial sensor designs
  • Ability to conceive innovative solutions to complex problems
  • Experience with inertial sensors (gyros and accelerometers), inertial sensor and IMU calibration and assessment
  • Knowledge of magnetometers
  • Statistical understanding of multi sample variance

Sandia’s Organization 5326 - Inertial Systems and Avionics II develops and delivers innovative inertial and electronic systems for a wide range of customers. These systems are intended for many aerospace and ground applications ranging from missile systems, air-delivered applications, unattended ground sensors, and exploratory-test RF and digital communication test units. The organization specializes in selection and evaluation of inertial sensors along with developing electronics subsystems for data acquisition and algorithm processing. Members of the organization have broadly varying skills that include inertial sensor and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) assessment and analysis, digital design (microcontroller and FPGA), firmware and software design, power and signal conditioning, and advanced mechanical design and electro/mechanical fabrication capability. Also, there is a vast amount of test and field experience that the organization brings forth to assure timely and reliable deliveries. Product developments can range from quick-turn to high rigor, and involve requirements capture, architectural design, modeling, detailed design, fabrication, system integration, testing at the appropriate levels, and test data analysis to ensure all requirements are met.
