Job Overview/Summary

The Quality Laboratory Lead collaborates with the Manager & Quality Control Laboratory to lead and support a team of scientists and technicians devoted to performing chemical, biological, and physical tests in support of Company efforts. Analyzes and records test results, maintains the lab and assists with a variety of special laboratory projects. Trains and advises Chemists and Lab Technician staff in coordination with Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day to day leadership of QC laboratory activities.
  • Serve as decision maker when Manager is not available; supervises chemistry staff in the absence of the Quality Manager.
  • Monitor reagent and supply inventory in order to ensure availability.
  • Assume responsibility for ensuring instrument maintenance is scheduled and completed. Trains staff on maintenance procedures.
  • Work closely with Manager and vendors to troubleshoot instrument and QC problems.
  • Under the direction of the Manager, organize, implement and perform new method and instrument validation.
  • Oversee the coordination of all training, education and competency testing/assessment of technical staff and provides input for performance evaluations.
  • Assist with lab equipment validation (IQ/PQ/OQ).
  • Perform laboratory bench work to develop, optimize, and troubleshoot analytical methods for testing raw materials and products (semi-finished and finished).
  • Validate analytical methods necessary for commercialization of products. This includes evaluating validation/verification/transfer requirements, equipment acquisition/installation, reference standards/reagents, drafting protocols, methods/reports, training, specification development and other steps as required.
  • Author method validation/verification/transfer protocols and reports compliant with cGMP regulations, industry standards, and customer direction consistent with the developed installation strategy and project scope.
  • Work in conjunction with senior staff to provide scientific contributions toward improvement, troubleshooting, method development and validation.
  • Work through problems quickly, efficiently, and relentlessly until a root cause is determined and solution is found.
  • Interact with project teams as required to obtain information, influence decisions, and drive projects forward. Serves as the analytical expert and contributing member on project teams.
  • Perform administrative functions, materials sourcing, vendor inquiries, exploration of new technologies as required to effect rapid and efficient project progression.
  • Work efficiently, minimizing distractions and managing time to meet expected deadlines. Provide regular reports on progress to leadership and during team meetings.
  • Must be able to create detailed laboratory testing metrics via Microsoft Excel and communicate the results effectively to management.
  • Work in compliance of all US and international regulatory agencies and compliance requirements as they relate to analytical testing.
  • Perform and document routine chemistry testing on Raw Material, Stability, and Finished Goods in accordance with GMPs and GLPs.
  • Conduct, assist team and document chemistry laboratory investigations
  • Approve or review testing documentation (notebook write-ups, worksheets, etc.)
  • Provide training on methods and general laboratory practices to incoming Chemists and Technicians
  • Create, uphold and revise standard operating procedures
  • Assure that all work areas are maintained in a neat and orderly fashion. Perform necessary cleaning, maintenance, and calibration of instrumentation, as required.

Key Skills, Abilities, Experience and Education Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science
  • Effective interpersonal skills with strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office
  • Proficient with computer-usage, including Microsoft packages, SAP, LIMS, etc.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of laboratory bench experience including research and teaching.
  • Familiar with HPLC, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, FTIR, and basic assay of Vitamins and Minerals

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Science or related field
  • Seven (7) years of laboratory bench experience in a regulated environment.
  • Previous leadership experience.
  • Formulation experience of nutraceuticals or related.
  • Prior nutraceutical industry experience.
