Job Description

At Houston Methodist, the Supervisor, Public Safety/Security position is responsible for overseeing day-to-day Public Safety/Security department operations and emergent activities of staff that provide safety and security for staff, patients and visitors of Houston Methodist. This position supervises daily shift activities including reviewing staffing levels to ensure compliance with facilities coverage. In addition, the Supervisor, Public Safety/Security position serves as the next higher level of reporting for department customers, regularly inspects on-site and off-site posts and facilities, investigates incidents and/or customer complaints and compiles data for accurate reporting. This position is the subject matter expert for normal department operations, acts as management in the absence of manager or director. Other duties for the Supervisor include, but are not limited to, performance improvement activities, directing and managing staff during normal and emergency operations, and actively participates as a member of department management to achieve operational goals.

  • Creates and maintains an environment of collaboration by mentoring and role modeling teamwork within the department. Effectively interacts within and between departments ensuring seamless flow of information/communication. (EF)
  • Consults with department leadership on coaching/corrective counseling, and staff performance to achieve desired outcomes. Conducts new hire feedback sessions and provides recognition/commendations, as appropriate. (EF)
  • Participates in management responsibilities of selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of employees. Provides development and mentoring of staff. Ensures that all department personnel are properly trained and complies with all policies and procedures. Assists with meeting or exceeding threshold goal for department turnover. (EF)
  • Role models clear and professional communication to facilitate problem resolution to achieve mutual understanding. Teaches others to critically think by verbally expressing rationale for decisions and follows up consistently. (EF)

SERVICE -30%
  • Ensures that daily security operations are conducted in accordance with HM security management plan, department policies and procedures. Proactively monitors the environment to ensure the safety and security of not only HM patients, guests, and staff, but all assigned physical property. (EF)
  • Monitors staff security responses to expected and emergent situations. Responds and remains on-site throughout duration, as needed. Supports and educates patients, visitors and HM staff in filing appropriate paperwork associated with security related issues. (EF)
  • Leads and maintains high customer satisfaction while providing the highest level of safety and security to patients, visitors, staff and assets. (EF)

QUALITY/SAFETY -20%
  • Employs a proactive approach in the optimization of safe outcomes by monitoring and improving the department workflow, using peer-to-peer accountability, and identifying solutions via collaboration. Role models situational awareness using teachable moments to improve safety. Participates in department process improvements and identifies opportunities for corrective action. Investigates to determine root cause of reported incidences as assigned by manager. (EF)
  • Accurately communicates and/or generates and completes reports by recording occurrences, information, observations, surveillance activities and conducting witness interviews. Prevents loss and damage by reporting irregularities, informing violators of policy and procedures. (EF)
  • Monitors self and ensures employee compliance with competencies, credentials, in-services, policies and procedures and assists management with associated actions upon non-compliance. (EF)
  • Facilitates and participates in training, drills and actual events according to policies and procedures. Responds immediately to all emergency codes and takes action appropriately. (EF)

FINANCE -10%
  • Maintains oversight of required security equipment, its purchase or maintenance, to ensure proper functionality. Utilizes and maintains HM and department equipment according to manufacturer specifications. (EF)
  • Assists in the management of essential and non-essential department expenditures to achieve financial target and staffing needs including scheduling, time off requests and time keeping, through optimization of productivity, supply/resource efficiency, minimizing incidental overtime and overtime percentage, and other areas according to department specifications. (EF)

GROWTH/INNOVATION -10%
  • Supports Houston Methodist and department goals and vision. Provides and maintains expertise on security operations and systems, proposing ideas to improve system functionality. Identifies industry trends and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow changes to improve department operations. Implements actions that promote a workplace safety culture and proactively prevents workplace violence. (EF)
  • Offers innovative solutions through participation in performance improvement projects and activities. Participates and is an active member in various Security/Safety programs and may participate on committees and task forces. (EF)

Qualifications:

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS


  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
  • Associate's Degree preferred

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Five years of experience in a security, military or law enforcement related field, three (3) years' of which indicate progressive leadership responsibility

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED


  • Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Private Security Registration non-commissioned Security Officer license
  • Valid Texas Driver's License, or must obtain Texas Driver's license within 90 days of hire
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) Certification within 60 days of hire
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED


  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Proficient in spreadsheet, word-processing, and presentation software, e.g. Microsoft Office
  • Ability to team build and sustain interpersonal relationships within the hospital environment
  • Professional handling of exposure to confidential/sensitive information
