Job Description
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a private, global research university that stands among the world’s most renowned educational institutions. The CMU College of Engineering is ranked #4 in the 2021 U.S. News and World Report list of best engineering schools and the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE) is ranked among the top 10 Mechanical Engineering programs in the country. The College of Engineering Dean’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is partnering with the MechE department in search of a Program Coordinator.

We are looking to increase diversity among the leaders and experts in engineering to solve the most pressing problems of today. This position will assist us in guiding the next generations of problem solvers to successfully engage in an ever-changing world. We are looking for an energetic and engaged professional to join Mechanical Engineering and College of Engineering teams to develop and coordinate mentorship for undergraduate and graduate students primarily from populations underrepresented in engineering. This individual will also organize training for student, faculty and staff mentors to better serve our community. Additionally, this person will play an integral role in bringing an Intergroup Dialogue program to the CMU College of Engineering. Intergroup Dialogue seeks to prepare students to live and work in a diverse world and educate them in making choices that advance equity, justice and peace.

Core Responsibilities include:

  • Develop, coordinate and implement a system for layered mentorship in the college of engineering with a primary focus on the mechanical engineering department. This includes peer mentorship, faculty mentorship and alumni mentorship initiatives.

  • Communicate with and provide support to student organizations to promote sustained mentorship programs and training. Student groups could include Women in MechE, MEGSO, ASME, Pi Tau Sigma.

  • Collaborate with the mechanical engineering academic advisors to provide resources and support to students traditionally underrepresented in engineering.

  • Liaise with CMU units to introduce mechanical engineering students to opportunities (such as internships) for which they should prepare early in their careers.

  • Work with the Associate Dean for DEI (AD-DEI) and the college-wide DEI committee to develop and implement the Intergroup Dialogue program (see above for description of the program).

  • Partner with the initiatives of the AD-DEI and the Vice Provost for DEI to foster an equitable culture of inclusion.

  • Performs a variety of routine work within established policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, social work, or a related field; Master’s degree

  • 1-3 years of experience working in the field of higher education related to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Experience in advising or mentoring students preferred.

  • Facilitation and training skills

  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Excellent analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment and interact with campus community and external customers

  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office (specifically Excel, Outlook, Power Point, and Word). Ability to learn a variety of software applications

  • Some evening and weekend hours are required.
