Product Designer - Opportunity For Working Remotely Chicago, IL

VMware Tanzu Labs is hiring a product designer. The designer will be a key member of a small product development team building new digital products alongside startups and Fortune 500 companies. This designer will apply user centered design, Lean Product principles, and XP development methodologies while coaching organizations into leading edge design and development practices. Designers in this role rely on human centered design principles to contribute to a huge variety of problem spaces, from data-heavy back-office tools to consumer focused mobile apps to interaction problems in medical devices.

VMware Tanzu Labs designers work end to end in the product development process, from research and discovery, to prototyping and solution testing, to visual design and supporting engineers. Designers should have some proficiency in UX research, UX design, interaction design and UI design in mobile and web contexts.

• Gone onsite with an aerospace company to try on AR headsets to allow remote experts to annotate work in progress. The designers identified that aircraft maintainers spend four hours a day standing in lines, and pivoted the product to address this.

• Worked with doctors to design take-home materials for patients considering high risk procedures, so that doctors always provide guidance aligned with the latest medical research.

• Created a design system to accelerate product development across five client offices.

• Presented designs to C-suite executives at Fortune 500 companies.

What You’ll Be Doing

We’re looking for a passionate Designer who knows how to help define and design a product vision with our clients. This is a consulting role that demands being able to work collaboratively with clients and colleagues on cross-functional product teams. The role demands strong product instincts, excellent communication skills, technical fluency, empathy, humility and an appreciation for and understanding of lean startup, agile and user-centered design values, principles and practices.

Additional Information:

• This position is flexible to be a remote (home office + travel) role. Please note the successful candidate would be required to work within a central time zone.
• 25% travel is expected in this role (post COVID-19 crisis)

You will be responsible for:

• Research, collate and synthesize user needs to help conceive, define, test and evolve solutions for our users across a range of mediums and experiences.

• Lead design on a team of product managers and developers to solve big, complex problems from concept to delivery in an agile environment

• Advocate for users and delivering outcomes in a dynamic work environment

• Advocate, mentor, and educate on the benefits of design thinking to product teams and new designers alike

• Bring a systems-thinking mindset to the application design

• Conduct and be familiar with a variety of generative and evaluative research methods

• Finds creative ways to continuously learn from customers

• Help identify new opportunities to solve valuable customer problems

• Craft user-centered artifacts to align teams around the broader user experience

• Design and facilitate co-creation design workshops

• Challenge teams to think bigger and act smaller

• Present work, concepts, and new ideas to cross-functional team members, adjacent teams, and senior leadership

• Keep abreast of industry trends

Desired Skills & Experience:

• 3+ years of experience in user experience and interaction design for complex web applications or services.

• Strong background in user-centered design principles across desktop, mobile, and web platforms.

• Experience navigating large organizations and an understanding of complex stakeholder relationships

• Experience closely collaborating with developers and product managers as part of small co-located and remote team

• Ability to work collaboratively with others and navigate complex decision making

• Expert skills defining and analyzing user flows and workflows.

• Expert skills in interaction design with a grasp of UCD process.

• Story telling - ability to tell simple user stories illustrating solutions.

• Strong leader and proven team player in a high achievement-oriented environment.

• Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, and analytical skills.

• Agile, adaptable, and capable of delivering new products and features.

• Comfortable with ambiguity. We work in an iterative and incremental way, balancing many different inputs and constantly making trade-offs.

• Possess a very high level of comfort in working with developers in the presentation layer (for example, HTML, CSS).

• Experience in working with tools such as Figma, Sketch, and Adobe Creative Suite.
