Battelle is currently seeking Principal Research Scientist with an expertise in Clinical Trials (Social Scientist III). This position is located in Baltimore, MD. Partial remote work may be considered.


JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking highly qualified individuals whose leadership in research in clinical trials, for example substance use/abuse, pain management research, clinical drug trial specialty areas is regarded as innovative, highly important and gaining increased recognition. The selected candidate must have demonstrated success of academic achievement and the ability to obtain funding for research programs through competitive grants and/or contracts. This individual exhibits ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness in the application and/or development of significantly advanced scientific principles, theories and concepts; as team member exposed and resolved problems associated with the development and implementation of important research programs; and plans and conducts R&D programs.


The selected candidate will be a lead contributor to grant and/or contract research working among and with a staff of PhD, MS and BS level scientists who are conducting on-going regulatory-related research currently directed at understanding areas such as addiction liability, human exposure, behavioral outcomes, and pain management among other relevant areas. The selected candidate will be responsible for helping to grow the research program, and associated areas of interest, overseeing the quality of the work performed and assisting in effective staff development. The candidate will also interact with management and other scientists on long-range planning pertaining to new or projected areas of research growth.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Organizes and leads successful research projects (current emphasis on contributing to the body of knowledge regarding human exposure to substance use including tobacco and marijuana to inform regulatory decision-making) with strategic clients, ideally providing support for a number of exempt and nonexempt staff.
  • Is accountable for high quality deliverables, satisfied clients, and sound financial management.
  • Organizes and leads successful proposal efforts for projects (through the formulation, proposal and submission of competitive grants and contracts) in strategic specialty areas.
  • Contributes substantially to planning and executing marketing and project development activities in specialized area within established budget.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying areas of growth and conceiving ideas for research programs and projects; contributes to the development of a strategic plan to grow and sustain a successful research group. Identifies areas of growth for the group, coordinates department response to new grants or contracts.
  • Generates project support, delegates work, provides training, technical leadership and direction to mid-level research staff.
  • Oversees quality of work performed and monitors business risks on grants or contracts that require a broad array of skills across our business unit and other business units within Battelle.
  • Maintains a growing national or international reputation demonstrated by actively engaging in high-quality research and publication and presenting results at scientific conferences in an area of specialization.
  • Establishes and maintains professional relationships with clients and internal colleagues. Works effectively and collaboratively with researchers and support staff at varying levels within the organization.
  • Provides responsible, competent technical advice to management.
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of the administrative nature of grant and/or contracting processes.
  • Performs other assigned duties.

THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED
  • A doctoral degree (PhD) in experimental, clinical and behavioral sciences and 1+ years of related research experience in relevant areas or an equivalent combination of education and experience OR a master's degree and 4+ years of related experience.
  • Existing reputation in the public health and/or scientific community as evidenced by numerous peer-reviewed publications, participation in professional organizations and presentations at national meetings and technical conferences and client workshops.
  • US citizenship is required.
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining funding from government, foundation or private sources through grants, contracts or sole-source funding is essential.
  • Experienced in cultivating, selling and managing large, technically complex projects that include collaboration across multiple scientific disciplines.
  • Project management experience, including conducting multidisciplinary projects with human subject testing, IRB required (OMB a plus).
  • Willingness to travel inside the United States on a limited basis.
