Job Description

Job Overview:
Ambry Genetics is seeking an experienced Bioinformatics Scientist to work closely with biologists, bioinformaticians, and clinicians to design, develop, validate, and maintain bioinformatics pipelines and applications that can run on-premise as well as the cloud. The Principal Bioinformatics Scientist will lead a team of Bioinformatics Scientists responsible for delivering bioinformatics solutions to support the analysis of clinical samples.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage a team of Bioinformatics Scientists to develop new methods and maintain bioinformatics software solutions
  • Provide guidance and mentorship for junior-level team members and make technical decisions
  • Establish project goals, milestones and timelines of deliverables for clinical product development and new assay validation
  • Provide bioinformatics support to R&D and Clinical Lab by analyzing and interpreting Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data
  • Lead in NGS data analysis, bioinformatics pipeline QA/QC, and troubleshooting and improvement for bioinformatics pipelines and applications for clinical tests


JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and Knowledge:
  • PhD degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, biophysics, biology and computer science, or related discipline plus at least 2 years postdoc/industrial experience
  • MS degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, biophysics, biology and computer science, or related discipline plus at least 5 years industrial experiences is required
  • Knowledge of cancer genomics and human genetics
  • Familiar with molecular biology, biological pathways, and genomics
  • Strong knowledge of current theories and principals of bioinformatics and computational biology
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (Skill, Abilities and Capabilities):
  • Knowledge in the cutting-edge tools and technologies used in the field of NGS
  • Ability to rationalize the uses and identify limitations of different tools, technologies and platforms in the field of NGS
  • Knowledge in the sample workflows (web and dry labs) in a diagnostic setting
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and visualize and communicate NGS analysis result
  • Proficiency with at least one programming language (Python, Perl, R, C/C++, Java) in Linux/Unix environment
  • Proficiency in the use of bioinformatics databases (COSMIC, TCGA, RefSeq, dbSNP, ClinVar, etc)
  • Ability to read and write a variety of structured/semi-structured formats (example: XML, JSON, CSV, TSV)
  • Experiences with HPC and storage systems in cloud-based and on-premise computing environments
  • Experience in Illumina sequencing data, bioinformatics NGS pipelines and public domain tools (BWA, SAMTools, Bowtie2, STAR, TopHat, Picard, PINDEL, GATK, CNVKit etc.)
  • Experiences with relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server
  • Working knowledge of code repository best practices and distributed version control (example: git/Subversion)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work within a team, among cross-departments, and as a team-level contributor, requiring minimal supervision
EXPERIENCE:
  • At least 5 years of experience working with NGS data
  • At least 5 years of experience in bioinformatics systems and software developments
  • At least 2 years mentoring experience
