Job Description
Duties

Work is performed on the mainland in Ventura, CA and on the parks remote islands. The island work will require frequent travel by boat where housing is provided, but mainland housing is not. This position serves as a journeyman level Preservationist performing historic preservation work on a variety of 19th and 20th century historic structures. Work involves the following:

  • Perform carpentry, masonry and painting related tasks, including roofing, framing, finishes, windows, doors, and cabinetry.
  • Replicate historic features, historic mortar mixes, and other treatments on historic structures while maintaining the maximum amount of historic fabric.
  • Perform journeyman level carpentry and masonry tasks to repair, reconstruct, replicate, restore, or rehabilitate historic structures and historic features.
  • Utilize investigation techniques to perform condition evaluations and recommend appropriate treatments for historic structures.
  • Make precise calculations of quantities, volumes, area, curves, arcs, tangents and elevations using tapes, rules, squares, angle finders, levels, sight levels, compass, divider, calipers and arithmetic calculation.
  • Perform tasks in accordance with oral instructions, written instructions, blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications and building codes.
  • Properly and safely select, use, and maintain a wide variety of modern and ancient hand tools, power tools, and stationary equipment for the performance of carpentry and masonry tasks.
  • Identify historic materials by type, species, texture, color, etc. Select appropriate material for carpentry and masonry related repairs, restorations, rehabilitation and the reconstruction of historic structures.
Physical Demands: Performs work at construction sites. Considerable physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of various sizes, weights, and shapes. Considerable standing, stooping, lifting, and bending. Work is frequently performed under structures, which requires work overhead or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward position. Fieldwork magnifies the physical effort required to perform the duties and reflect actual restoration project environments. Required to perform craftsman work in the investigation of historic structures and in working with other employees in restoration techniques. Inspections may require working in cramped, close quarters underneath structures or on rooftops several hundred feet above ground level. Occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more. Backcountry work may require hiking or riding horseback to the job site in remote locations over rough terrain.

Working Conditions: Work is performed throughout the Park, subject to cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters or chips. In the shop, exposed to noise and sawdust in the air. The presence of lead paint on historic fabric may require special knowledge and handling and the use of protective equipment in the shop or at the job site, and require special attention and the use of safety equipment. Work is both inside and outside, in all types of weather. Must work at elevations from sea level to above 4,000 feet. Temperatures vary from -20 to 90+ degrees. Winter snow depths may vary from two to six feet with icy driving conditions involved. May be exposed to snow and ice conditions in winter and rain and wind in summer. Considering the nature of historic structures and the unknown structural characteristics, field inspections may contain some hazardous conditions (e.g., asbestos, PCBs).

Requirements Conditions of Employment

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You will be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 16 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Travel to and from islands requires riding on boats, fixed wing aircrafts or helicopter; boat transportation involves transferring from a moving boat to a stationary pier and vice versa.
  • Mainland and remote island work is involved. Island work requires frequent travel by boat. Island housing is provided but mainland housing is not. Employee will be required to secure private housing.
  • Government Charge Card: You will be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications Ability to do the work of a Preservationist WG-09 without more than normal supervision (screen out). This includes work experience performing the following duties: repairing historic structures/buildings which required complex problem solving and initiative to complete interior and exterior carpentry, finish carpentry, roofing, masonry, and window repairs; worked on frame, timber, and log structures; experience working on historic preservation projects without damaging historic fabric; experience frequently using contemporary techniques and materials in preservation treatment.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately March through December and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.
