Location: Flexible, Washington DC preferredJOB SUMMARY AND KEY PRIORITIES:This new position at Active Minds will be an integral part of the growing policy and advocacy work at Active Minds. The manager will play a key role in tracking mental health-related policy to inform and develop Active Minds’ strategic advocacy plan. They will manage and oversee our organization’s policy strategies including supervising the work of outside consultants to develop a strategic advocacy plan; collaborating with partner organizations on policy work and activities; co-leading initiatives that engage Active Minds volunteers in advocacy work; and proposing new initiatives for the organization. The Policy Manager reports to the Chief Program Officer in addition to collaborating with other staff.ABOUT ACTIVE MINDS

KEY RESULTS:
  • Strategic Advocacy Plan Development: Help hire, and supervise, external advocacy strategists to develop Active Minds’ policy platform and policy priorities. In collaboration with the strategists, identify the core policy issues that Active Minds collectively values, using a collaborative process that includes engaging key Active Minds stakeholders (i.e. staff, Board, student advisory committees, ambassadors, etc.) on their input and feedback.
  • Legislative Education: Track state and federal legislative matters and policy issues related to Active Minds’ mission. Meet with federal- and state-level policy decision-makers as needed to provide information regarding mental health and suicide prevention. Develop policy-related content for Active Minds’ website, blog, webinars, events and/or newsletters.
  • Policy-Related Partnerships: Support Active Minds’ priority policy partners in integrating a youth/young adult perspective into the whole of their advocacy work. Co-host quarterly and/or as-needed calls with youth and young adult policy advocates in AM’s network to provide updates, ask for their perspectives on key questions or initiatives, and to hear about the issues that are of concern to them
  • Thought Leadership: Develop opportunities to advance visibility and recognition opportunities for Active Minds in the advocacy space. Build and maintain relationships with partners and decision-makers to position Active Minds as an expert and leader in the field of mental health.
  • Administration: Manage budgets; maintain and track organized records in the organization-wide CRM system, Salesforce; and participate in cross-department committees and initiatives.


Qualifications
  • Education in public policy, public affairs, health systems management and policy, or related areas
  • At least two years experience planning, managing, and implementing policy-related projects
  • Knowledge of or experience with mental health as a field
  • Belief that equity and social justice are important and driven to hear, reflect, and act on this belief
  • Advocate for social entrepreneurship and a believer in young people making an impact

Minimum salary for this position is $60,000 and comes with a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid vacation and sick time; paid federal holidays; health, dental and vision coverage; and 401(k) matching. The starting pay for this position is equal to others at the same level throughout the organization. Candidates whose experience meets both the minimum and preferred qualifications may be considered for a starting salary that exceeds the current amount.
