Salary:

  • First Year Annual Salary: $49,726.82* (*12 Weeks of training + 1 year probation)
  • Second Year Annual Salary: $53,478.62** (** $57,489.52 w/Bachelor’s Degree)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Works under the supervision of Memphis Police Academy staff to learn to perform a wide range of tasks to promote public safety and security. Learns to perform general enforcement of the laws including patrolling assigned areas, apprehending and controlling suspects, and controlling traffic, writing reports, providing public information, maintaining records and material evidence, and providing court testimony. Attends training classes as required and meets mandatory training requirements. Exercises and comprehends rules, regulations, and policies of the MPD Training Academy and applicable federal, state, and local laws. Learns to execute basic criminal investigation principles, practices, and techniques for use in patrol-related activities. Exercises and uses basic interview skills to obtain information from suspects, victims, and witnesses. Learns to operate a patrol vehicle and uses appropriate weapons/equipment associated with law enforcement in a safe manner. Learns defensive tactic techniques in controlling and apprehending suspects. Learns to apply minimal levels of force to control subjects in patrol-related situations to ensure the safety of the officer and of the general public. Learns to recognize controlled substances and how to request assistance in handling the materials. Learns to provide first-aid assistance to those in need during emergency situations. Demonstrates critical thinking to solve problems in patrol-related situations. Learns to maintain tact and courtesy when interacting with various people and confidentiality when dealing with law-enforcement sensitive information.

OTHER FUNCTIONS: * Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Requires the ability to traverse uneven terrain. Requires the ability to do physically demanding work which includes bending, stooping, crouching, sitting, standing, running, navigating in confined spaces, lifting and carrying heavy items weighing up to 100 lbs. with or without assistance. Must have the physical agility to maneuver a dead weight object up to 175 lbs for training purposes. Must have the strength and dexterity to perform defensive tactics and successfully complete firearms training. Must be able to operate and use law enforcement tools and equipment, including but not limited to: weapons, handcuffs, vehicles, computers, and other technological devices.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Requires work in a classroom setting and exposure to inclement weather conditions during training. May include rotating shifts and holidays. Potentially hazardous conditions may exist during defensive tactics, weapons training and defensive driving. Requires the use of protective gear when necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least two (2) years as a full-time, certified (P.O.S.T. Certification) active law enforcement officer & currently employed as a paid, sworn officer, with a verifiable and favorable work record within a Commissioned Law Enforcement Agency that employs twenty (20) or more paid, full-time officers

AND

  • Must not have been convicted of, or pled guilty (or enter a plea of Nolo Contendere) to any felony charges.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age upon completion of the Police Basic Training Program.
  • Must successfully pass entry level requirements and testing (physical, written, background investigation, psychological and medical) for Police Recruit.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver license as a condition for continued employment.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.

Service Incentive (Longevity) Pay

  • All officers will earn incentive pay after 5 years of service.

Longevity pay shall be paid monthly according to the following schedule and rates:

  • 5 Years of Service = 0.75% of Base Pay
  • 10 Years of Service = 1.00% of Base Pay
  • 15 Years of Service = 1.25% of Base Pay
  • 20 Years of Service = 1.50% of Base Pay
  • 25 Years of Service = 1.75% of Base Pay

Out of Rank Pay

  • Temporary or Special Assignments

Hazardous Duty Pay

Covers the following duties and assignments – Certified Crisis Intervention Team (CIT); Hostage Negotiation Team; Motorcycle Squad; Bomb Technician Unit; Dog Squad; and Crime Scene at a pay rate of:

  • Annually = $780.00
  • Monthly = $65.00
  • Bi-weekly = $30.00
  • Hourly = $0.375

Field Training Officer (F.T.O.) Pay

Bilingual Pay

Officers competent in speaking, reading and writing in a language other than English will be compensated as follows (Sign-language may also be considered as a non-English language):

  • Annually = $900.12
  • Monthly = $75.01
  • Bi-weekly = $ 34.62
  • Hourly = $ 0.4327
