Job Description

The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services is seeking to hire a full time Physician Assistant to provide primary health care services. Selected candidate will be joining our staff of Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and other health care professionals. Interest or experience in serving patients with Mental Health needs preferred. Salary range for this position is $34.555 - $59.239 per hour. Salary based on experience. The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating 10 institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. The department's focus includes inmate programming and education, physical and behavioral health care, re-entry services, and community programs, and is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Examples of Work

Under direct supervision of a licensed physician performs health care services to patients who are under the care of a state institution. Incumbents perform only such medical procedures and tasks as are usually performed within the normal scope of the supervising physician's practice and independently conducts appropriate examinations and recommends proper diagnosis and treatment for the final approval of the supervising physician. This level assumes supervisory and management responsibilities for medical programs within a facility. The supervising physician is fully responsible for all Physician Assistant activities; performs related work as required.

Qualifications / Requirements


REQUIREMENTS: Certification and current license as a Physician Assistant in the State of Nebraska. Graduation from an American Medical Association approved Physician Assistant program or have passed the National Commission Certification examination; supervisory experience helpful.

PREFERRED: Experience working as a Physician Assistant within a clinical setting or equivalent experience. Current CPR/ALCS certification preferred (required within one year of hire). Interest or experience in serving patients with Mental Health needs.

OTHER: Applicants who will be graduating from a PA or NP program within the next three months will be considered. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: the Life Sciences including Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Histology, and Embryology; the use and effect of modern drugs; primary care medicine as outlined by the Nebraska State Board of Medical Examiners for Physician Assistants.

Ability to: gain the confidence and cooperation of patients, the medical staff, and students; initiate primary care for patients when necessary; communicate orally and in writing with patients, family members and/or guardians, nurses, team members, and other medical staff; react effectively to medical and psychiatric emergencies.

Skill in: interacting effectively with interdisciplinary teams toward providing medical care; clinical assessments and differential diagnosis; physical examination; basic CPR; interpreting laboratory data and x-rays; performing minor surgery; proctoscopy; the treatment of non-displaced fractures and casting; documenting observations and diagnosis.
