Job Description

Position Summary:
Procurement of blood samples (venous and capillary). The lab hours for this position are M-F 0800-1700.


Accountabilities/Essential Job Functions:

  • Out-Patient
  • Performing venipuncture/capillary sticks according to provider order
  • Maintain communication with providers to ensure completeness of requisition (provider signatures, ICD 10 codes etc)
  • Computer entry:
  • Register patients: to include obtaining/copying all required insurance/photo ID documentation to be scanned into patient’s EMR at SVH.
  • Order Entry
  • Processing samples: preparation of samples for transportation to SVH and/or per reference lab specifications if required to send-out from SVH.
  • Ensuring that patients are added to the Fax Log or auto fax is activated (when again available) to ensure delivery of results to provider when complete.
  • Maintaining supply inventory and forwarding supply requests to SVH for replenishment as needed.
  • Result look-up and intervention should providers not receive results as planned.
  • Relief phlebotomist orientation/training

Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities: None


Education/Training:


Phlebotomists will have:

  • Completed an educational training program which consists primarily of hands-on training. This training generally includes safe handling and collection of venous blood samples as well as skin puncture techniques.
  • the ability to qualify for MA Phlebotomist certification in Washington State
  • have recent phlebotomy experience

Experience: Must prove competency in the collection of venous and capillary blood samples

  • to be proficient in venipuncture
  • to possess good interpersonal skills when relating to patients and fellow staff members; to be able to work with a diverse patient group, treating all patients and staff with respect and consideration
  • to have the ability to perform various clerical duties
  • to possess knowledge of safety procedures
  • to always look professional; Royal blue scrubs are required and shoes should be appropriate
  • good driving record

Environmental/Job Hazards: Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions associated with a hospital environment


Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Ability to meet the physical requirements to perform associated lab tasks
  • Full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand co-ordination

  • Some stooping, bending, and reaching
  • Lifting and carrying items up to 30 pounds
