Job Description

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an integral member of the inter-disciplinary team providing care for patients from infancy through adolescence with pain as well as palliative care needs in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In collaboration with the attending physicians on service, the nurse practitioner works at the top of her/his/their license and rounds on patients independently as well as part of a team, and supports the IP3 service teams: pain, palliative care, and integrative medicine. The NP has in depth knowledge and clinical expertise in communication, pain and symptom management.

Assists with decision making and goals of care, facilitates emotional, spiritual, and bereavement support throughout the child’s continuum of care and at end-of-life. These services are provided concurrently and complementary to all other appropriate treatments ranging from curative to palliative. In addition, has continued responsibilities for clinical practice, patient, family, and staff education; consultation, discharge coordination for complex patients, research, and departmental leadership, and is accountable to the Pediatric IP3 Service Medical Director and the unit director of the IP3 Service. The IP3 Service is growing consult service, and we are seeking a clinically outstanding, competent, compassionate Nurse Practitioner with excellent communication skills, provides cross- coverage, and who will take an active part in the continued development of the service.

UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APP) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governances (OMAG) in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.

Required Qualifications

  • Five years in a pediatric tertiary care hospital including nursing care of infants and children with complex acute and chronic life threatening conditions, complex pain needs, end of life care
  • Three years current NP clinical experience in complex pediatric pain management, treatment, and prevention for children and adolescents and/or three years current NP clinical experience in management of the pediatric palliative care and end of life patient
  • Clinical experience in integrative therapies
  • Active Nurse Practitioner licensure in the State of California
  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Active American Heart Association PALS Certification
  • Active NP Furnishing License
  • Active and/or transferable DEA License to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice; it is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA License to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer
  • Current national certification in a PNP or FNP specialty
  • Pediatric Palliative Care or APRN End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) certification
  • Pain Management Nursing Certification [American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN)]
  • Completed a recognized graduate Master’s Degree program as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day; CCS enrollment as appropriate for Pediatric environments
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice
  • Demonstrate leadership skills with interdisciplinary team collaboration
  • Demonstrate experience working effectively in a diverse environment
  • Able to work independently as well as collaboratively with other healthcare providers
  • Ability to work with others in the care of critically ill patients within stressful environment
  • Possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Skilled in physical and psychosocial assessment of families and children from infancy through adolescence
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, teaching and teamwork skills
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification through the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses (NBCHPN®) as either Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse (ACHPN), Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse (CHPN) or Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Pediatric Nurse (CHPPN)

License/Certification

  • Active Nurse Practitioner licensure in the State of California
