Job Description

The Johnson & Johnson Law Department is recruiting for a Patent Agent to be based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This position will report to one of Johnson & Johnson’s Senior Patent Counsel and will interface with patent attorneys and R&D members that are supporting the digital health efforts of Johnson & Johnson, particularly with respect to the convergence of data science, therapeutics, medical devices, and robotics to elevate the standard of medical care that patients receive across the globe.

As a Patent Agent you will:

  • Oversee the preparation and prosecution patent applications and recommend patent filing strategies in coordination with inside and outside counsel, and R&D team members.
  • Harvest invention disclosures and coordinate patent review board meetings.
  • Conduct prior art searches for patentability and validity analyses.
  • Conduct patent due diligence studies with working attorneys.
  • Monitor patent families of interest.
  • Review competitor materials in preparation for both offensive and defensive litigation strategies.
  • Communicate with business units across the organization to harmonize patent processes in a manner consistent with the organization’s overall objectives.
  • Provide solutions to a wide range of difficult technical and IP problems.
  • Work under general direction and determine/develop various approaches to recommended solutions.
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned.


Qualifications

  • BS degree in Engineering or technical area (with a strong preference for those with Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Computer Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering degrees or extensive expertise in robotics).
  • Intellectual Property experience with 4+ years working in a technical environment (such as Engineering), preferably in medical devices industry.
  • USPTO (Registered Patent Agent Certification) preferred.
  • Approximate experience, or equivalent knowledge and skills, necessary to satisfactorily perform the position responsibilities described above.
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.
  • Travel 20% or less, though there may be a need for some interoffice travel amongst offices in the Bay Area
  • This position will be based in Redwood City.
