Job Summary:

Join the University Housing Team as a Painter. We are seeking energetic and skilled candidates to patch, repair, prepare, and paint various surfaces in our residential and dining facilities. Work with a team of professionals focused on providing outstanding customer service. We offer excellent benefits, including vacation, holiday, personal holiday, and sick leave. The employer share amounts to approximately 88% of the total premium cost resulting in a much more affordable health plan. All tools for this position will be supplied.

Responsibilities: Patches, repairs, prepares, and paints various surfaces using appropriate tools and equipment to ensure adequate, safe, and operable institutional facilities. Designs, fabricates, and installs signage.

• 5% Interprets blueprints and drawings to assess and determine specifications and calculate the materials and equipment required. Discusses project plan with customer/client
• 10% Gathers materials, prepares work area, and maintains equipment and supplies needed for jobs
• 65% Completes skilled painting work, color matching, and mixing according to established trade standards and applicable building and safety codes
• 5% Reviews finished projects with client/customer. Maintains records and reports of work status and completion according to established deadlines and expectations
• 5% Prepares and levels dry wall
• 10% Cleans work area upon completion of projects according to established guidelines and expectations

Tasks:

• Provides support and assists as needed in the implementation of plans and procedures in the event of an emergency.
• Assists with move in/out operations.
• Completes work in occupied or vacant residence hall and dining spaces.
• Demonstrates and role models exceptional customer service; communicates with residents and staff to address work requests.
• Creates, promotes, and participates in a collaborative team environment.
• Maintains and implements prescribed cleaning standards.
• Maintains painted surfaces in assigned residential, office, and dining spaces.

Education:

Preferred
High School Diploma - Preferred Minimum and the completion of a registered apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a Painter as defined on DWD website - https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/apprenticeship/trades/painter-n-decorator.htm
Completion of an apprenticeship approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a painter. Formal recognition of status by the appropriate international or local trade organization or some type of similar formal validation of journeyman status may also be accepted. Persons having informal training and experience equivalent to the formal apprenticeship and journeyman status may also be accepted upon submission of documented proof of such training and experience. Evidence of at least 6 ,240 hours total of exterior and interior preparation and finish, paper hanging, decorating, spraying/rigging and care/use of tools and equipment including 400 hours of related instruction and safety procedures. Such evidence may include letters or statements from past customers/clients and/or employers.

Qualifications:

Journeyman level painter certification or equivalent experience/apprenticeship required.

Work Schedule:

Schedule for this position may be set in 8 hour or 10 hour shifts, Monday through Friday, for a total of 40 hours per week, with a primary start time of 7:00am.

Schedules are subject to adjust based on operational need and some overtime schedules may be required.

Journeymen Painter:
The purpose of this section is to allow you to determine whether you are a recognized journey level Painter and, therefore, eligible to compete and qualify for journey level Painter vacancies with The University of Wisconsin Madison. Journey level (or equivalent) status must be earned by completing at least 6,240 hours of experience in all of the following work processes:

1. Exterior 1,552 hours

• Preparing surface, sandpaper, spackling and puttying
• Putty making, paint mixing, color mixing
• Application of material (priming and finish coats)
• Removing paint, burning or liquid
• Latex

2. Abrasive and water blasting and rigging 492 hours

3. Interior 2,044 hours
Woodwork:

• Finishing wood trim with enamel and varnish
• Pore filling, shellacking, spackling
• Preparing stains, staining, bleaching wood
• Blending, glazing
• Spraying and spray equipment
• Color mixing, putty making, pumice stone rubbing

Wall Surfaces:

• Preparing, sizing walls
• Paint stippling
• Finishing walls with flat coat and enamels
• Various types of mottling
• Waterpaints and Latex
• Textured wall surfaces
• Drywall taping

4. Wallcovering 1,168 hours

• Preparing, sizing walls
• Paste making and mixing of prepared paste
• Applying various types of wall covering

5. Decorating 584 hours

• Coloring mixing, color harmony
• Stenciling (design and cutting)
• Striping, metal leafing, faux finishing

6. Paid Related Instruction 400 hours

• Trade Specific Publications including regular assignments from trade specific magazines.

Formal Apprenticeship
The traditional method of earning journey level status in an apprenticeable trade is through an indenture between an apprentice, an employer, and, if appropriate, the trade organization. During the term of the indenture, the apprentice would be directly supervised by one or more journey workers. During the indenture, the apprentice would be rotated through all work processes and operations appropriate to the respective trade. Upon recommendation of the supervising journey worker, and approval by an appropriate authority, an apprentice would earn journey worker recognition in the trade in which the indenture was served.

Current Recognition
An alternative method of verifying acquisition of the required journey level skills is to present evidence of current (or fairly recent past) recognition as a journey level Plasterer by an appropriate authority.

Equivalent Training and Experience
Another method of verifying acquisition of the required journey level skills is to present evidence of having performed all of the activities listed above (at least 4,580 hours); such evidence may include letters or statements from past customers/clients an/or employers, and must satisfy requirements of any recognized trade organization.
